IRVING, Texas – The American Conference has announced the weekly women’s swimming and diving honors.
Swimming Athlete of the Week
Ava Portello, Sophomore, Rice
Portello started off the season strong with two individual wins at the Seminole Fall Classic, Sept. 26-27, in Tallahassee, Florida. The sophomore captured the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:48.01, which ranks first in the American and fifth in Division I, while also winning the 500 freestyle in 4:50.08, which ranks first in the conference and second in Division I.
Freshman Swimming Athlete of the Week
Lily Archibald, Rice
Archibald started off her collegiate career with three individual top-2 finishes at the Seminole Fall Classic, Sept. 26-27, in Tallahassee, Florida. She won the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 53.65 and finished second in the 50 butterfly (24.46) and 200 butterfly (2:00.89). All three times are first in the American and in the top 15 in Division I. She also led off the 200 freestyle relay with a 50 freestyle-time of 23.33, which also ranks first in the conference.
Diving Athlete of the Week
Frida Zuniga, R-Senior, East Carolina
Zuniga opened the season on Sept. 26 with a meet against ACC competition Boston College and Duke by winning the 1-meter event with a score of 301.10 and placing second in the 3-meter competition with a score of 292.45. Both marks are NCAA Zone Diving qualifying scores. A week later against Liberty, the redshirt senior picked up wins on 1-meter (264.55) and 3-meter (279.95).
Freshman Diving Athlete of the Week
Romina Hernandez, East Carolina
Hernandez picked up a pair of top-3 finishes in her first two collegiate contests. She placed second on 1-meter against Liberty with a score of 233.45 after finishing third on 3-meter with a score of 273.30 against Boston College and Duke.
