Florida Atlantic Takes Top Seed For American Women's Tennis Championship

IRVING, Texas – The Florida Atlantic Owls have earned the No. 1 seed for the 2025 American Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Championship, which begins Thursday at the Leftwich Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Memphis.
 
The Owls closed their regular season with a 4-1 win against FIU Saturday, capping a 15-0 regular season and leaving Florida Atlantic as the nation’s only undefeated team entering postseason play.
 
Florida Atlantic, which received one of three byes to the quarterfinal round, will begin tournament play Friday against the winner of Thursday’s first-round match between No. 9 UAB and No. 8 UTSA.
 
Rice earned the No. 2 seed following a 16-5 regular season and will begin its tournament run Friday against either No. 10 North Texas or No. 7 Tulane.
 
Charlotte claimed the No. 3 seed and will face either No. 11 South Florida or No. 6 Memphis in the quarterfinals.
 
The women’s championship begins Thursday, April 17, and continues through the April 20 final. The winner of the women’s championship will earn The American’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division I Tennis Championships.

Championship Notes
Florida Atlantic is seeded No. 1 in The American Championship for the first time.
 
Tulsa enters the American Women’s Tennis Championship in search of its fourth tournament title. The Golden Hurricane, seeded No. 4 in this year’s event, previously won the championship in 2015, 2016 and 2018. Tulsa is 17-6 all-time in the American Championship and has the best winning percentage in the tournament of any team (.739).
 
The No. 1 seed has won the team championship five times in the tournament’s 10-year history (Tulsa in 2016, UCF in 2019 and 2021, SMU in 2022 and 2024).  The championship has been won by a No. 1 seed, a No. 2 seed, two No. 3 seeds, a No. 4 seed and a No. 7 seed.
 
The American has five teams in last week’s ITA national computer rankings. Florida Atlantic is No. 27, Rice is No. 43, Charlotte is No. 47, Tulsa is No. 50 and Wichita State is No. 54 in the rankings of April 8. The updated rankings, which produced the seeds for this year’s American Championship, will be made public Tuesday.
