MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Leonie Moeller capped a 4-0 week in singles with a straight-set win at the No. 1 position Monday to lead Memphis to a 4-2 win against Tulsa Sunday in the championship final of the American Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Championship at the Leftwich Tennis Center.
Moeller was named as the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player after she was first to finish Sunday with a 6-3, 6-4 win against Tulsa’s Maria Berlanga Bandera, who is ranked No. 86 by the ITA.
The No. 6-seeded Tigers (10-13), who entered the tournament with a 6-13 record against a daunting schedule, strung together their fourth straight win to claim their second American Athletic Conference title (2022) and gain an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.
The Tigers were able to make quick work of the Golden Hurricane in doubles as Sofia Mykhailets and Alyssa Richter took a 6-3 win at No. 1 and Alice Amendola and Clemence Thouard scored a 6-2 victory at No. 3. And Moeller staked the Tigers to a 2-0 lead with her straight-set victory in singles.
Tulsa responded with a pair of singles wins to the score, however, as Lily Hutchings pulled out a straight-set win of her own at No. 3 and Mariana Manyoma Velasquez delivered a three-set victory at No. 2 with a 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 win.
Memphis was able to close out the match with close straight-set victories on two of the three remaining courts. Clemence Thouard battled to a 7-6 (5), 7-4 win at No. 6 and Emily Meyer clinched the title with a 7-5, 7-5 win at No. 4.
Memphis will learn its NCAA Championship pairing April 28.
