04.19.25

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis took advantage of its home court surroundings and Tulsa ended Florida Atlantic’s 16-match winning streak to set up Sunday’s championship final in the American Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Championship at the Leftwich Tennis Center.

The No. 6-seeded Tigers, who entered the tournament with a 6-13 record, strung together their third straight win to handle Rice in a 4-2 victory. The Golden Hurricane, which is no stranger to the championship final, won a marathon match against previously unbeaten Florida Atlantic, taking a 4-3 decision.

Sunday’s championship final will be a rematch of the 2022 final, when Memphis scored a 4-1 win on Tulsa’s home courts. Sunday’s final will be carried live on ESPN+

Erin McKenzie won a grueling three-set match at No. 6 singles as Tulsa ended Florida Atlantic’s 16-match winning streak and advanced to the American Championship final with a 4-3 victory Saturday in a match last lasted four hours, 35 minutes.

McKenzie was locked in a singles battle with the Owls’ Millie-Mae Matthews for more than three-and-a-half hours and featured two set-tiebreakers before McKenzie pulled out a 5-7, 7-6 (1), 7-6 (5) victory.

Florida Atlantic entered the match as the nation’s only unbeaten team as the Owls fell for the first time in 2025.

Tulsa had built a 3-0 lead after taking the doubles point and a pair of straight-set wins at the top of the singles ladder. But Florida Atlantic rallied to tie the score with straight-set victories at No. 4 and No. 5 singles and another three-set battle at No. 3 as Lara Smejkal won 6-2, 6-7 (3), 6-4.

The win sends the Golden Hurricane to the championship final for the seventh time as Tulsa looks to capture a record fourth American title. Tulsa improved to 20-6 all-time in the American Championship.
