HOUSTON – Three of the top four singles players in both the men’s and women’s brackets advanced to the semifinal to highlight an exciting day two at the American Individual Championship Friday.
The No. 1, 2 and 4 seeds for men’s and women’s singles all picked up victories to set up a strong Saturday of semifinals.
On the women’s side, No. 1 Xin Tong Wang from Wichita State won her match in thrilling fashion 7-6 (10-8), 7-6 (8-6) while a pair of Rice players, No. 2 Uma Bakaityte and No. 4 Francesca Maguina, won their respective matches 6-0, 7-5 and 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.
The lone upset of the day in singles came from Memphis’ Leonnie Moeller as she knocked off No. 5 Giorgia Roselli from Rice 6-1, 7-6 (8-6) to advance to Saturday.
In doubles play, No. 1 seed Wang and Roselli from Wichita State cruised to an 8-4 win and the No. 3 seed Lou Chalard and Lilly Schultz from UNT won 8-7 (7-3).
The two seeded duos will face off with unseeded opponents in the semifinal. Alexia Patru and Ioana Sava from Florida Atlantic won 8-3 while Amalia Widdowson and Shona Nakano of Charlotte pulled an 8-5 upset over No. 2 Sienna Leeson and Margherita Marcon from South Florida.
For the men, No. 1 seed Petro Kuzmenok won 7-6 (7-2), 6-1, the No. 2 seed Daniel Phillips from Tulane won 6-3, 7-5 and the No. 4 seed Victor Tosetto from Tulsa won 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
UTSA’s Enzo Vargas is the lone unseeded player in the semifinal after a 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) comeback victory in the quarters.
Doubles play for the men’s side saw the No. 1 seed Rice’s Kuzmenok and Tommy Czaplinski bring home a 8-7 (7-5) win, the No. 5 seed Pablo Alcaya and Rodrigo Cruz from Wichita State win 8-5 over the No. 4 seed from South Florida, and the No. 3 seed Victor Tosetto and Otso Martikainen of Tulsa win 8-4.
Much like on the women’s side, No. 2 seed in doubles fell against an unseeded opponent as Ondrej Valek and Conor Flynn from UAB picked up an 8-6 victory over Sam Reeve and Benjamin Martin from Memphis.
Semifinals for both singles and doubles of the main draw for both men’s and women’s action resumes Saturday with the winner of each match advancing to Sunday’s championship matches.
