HOUSTON - Wichita State’s Xin Tong Wang and Enzo Vargas of UTSA captured the women’s and men’s singles titles, respectively, while Charlotte’s Amalia Widdowson and Shona Nakano and Wichita State’s Pablo Roche Alcaya and Rodrigo Cruz claimed the women’s and men’s doubles championships Sunday to conclude the 2026 American Conference Individual Tennis Championships at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
Both the finalists on the men’s side, Vargas and Tulsa’s Victor Tosetto, as well the individual women’s champion, Wang earned a spot in the ITA Masters Championships in Rome, Georgia
Wang and Vargas delivered dominant performances in singles play, while Charlotte avenged last year’s women’s doubles final loss with a thrilling three-set victory over the defending champions from Wichita State.
The women’s doubles title match was tight throughout with Xin Tong Wang and Giorgia Roselli from Wichita State winning the opening set 7-6 (10-8). Widdowson and Nakano bounced back, however, with a strong 6-2 win in the second set to set up a 10-point tiebreak in the third set.
It took over 10 points to decide it, but ultimately the duo from Charlotte pulled out the win 11-9.
The win for the 49ers avenged last year’s women’s doubles championship that saw Wang and Roselli from Wichita State win 6-4, 6-4 over Charlotte.
On the men’s side, Alcaya and Cruz won their opening set 6-4 and found themselves in a 6-6 tiebreak point for the second set against Victor Tosetto/Otso Martikainen from Tulsa. The Shockers’ pair dominated the tiebreak, winning 7-1 and ultimately taking the match 6-4, 7-6 (7-1).
It was the first time in the three-year history of the event the Shockers have won a title in the individual championships on the men’s side.
In the men’s singles final, Vargas was strong from start to finish with a 6-3, 6-3 win over No. 4 Victor Tosetto from Tulsa. Vargas joins Tulsa’s Alex Okonkwo as the second singles player in the history of the championship to win the tournament as an unseeded player.
Vargas dropped just two sets across five matches in the tournament and knocked off a pair of seeded opponents en route to the title.
In the women’s singles final, the top overall seed Wang continued her stellar play with a 6-2, 6-1 win over No. 2 Rice’s Uma Bakaityte.
Wang did not drop a set in her four matches in the tournament as she bounced back from falling in last season’s semifinal to earn her spot in the ITA Master’s.
