Wichita State and Rice Set to Face Off for the American Women’s Tennis Championship

HOUSTON, Texas – Top-seeded Wichita State and host Rice are set to face off in the American Women’s Tennis Championship final on Sunday in Houston after winning their semifinals match on Saturday morning.
 
The championship match is set for noon CT on ESPN+ with Lincoln Rose, Jessica Baron Green and Brooke Kirchofer on the call.

Xin Tong Wang, Giorgia Roselli and Theodora Chantava each won their singles matches in straight sets as No. 28 Wichita State shut out Tulsa 4-0 on Friday in the American Conference Women’s Tennis Championship at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
 
Wichita State secured the doubles point behind wins from both completed matches, then clinched the contest quickly in singles play. The Shockers entered the matchup as the tournament’s No. 28 nationally ranked team and never dropped a completed set.
 
In singles, Chantava, ranked No. 92 nationally, was first off the court, sweeping Carolina Alonso 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 3 position. Roselli followed with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Isabella Basson at No. 2 singles, putting Wichita State within one point of the sweep.
 
Wang closed out the match at the top spot, defeating Maria Santos 6-1, 6-4 to seal the win.
 
Wichita State also took control early by sweeping the completed doubles matches. The 34th-ranked team of Roselli and Wang defeated Basson and Santos 6-1 at No. 1, while Kudryavtseva and Chantava earned a 6-3 win over Alonso and Uta Asakura at No. 2.
 
Rice 4, Charlotte 3 (Box Score)

Francesca Maguina clinched the decisive point as No. 3 Rice defeated No. 2 Charlotte 4-3 on Saturday in the semifinals of the American Conference Women’s Tennis Championship.
 
The Owls took an early advantage in doubles. Francesca Maguina and Ema Mravcova earned a 6-2 win over Andrea Chacon and Shona Nakano at No. 2, and Daniela Chica and Divna Ratkovic followed with a 7-6 (4) victory against Lucia Aranda and Yelyzaveta Chainykova at No. 3 to secure the opening point. Charlotte’s Sara Suchankova and Ni Xi won 6-3 at No. 1 doubles.
 
In singles play, Rice picked up a straight-set win from Nithesa Selvaraj at No. 5, defeating Yelyzaveta Chainykova 6-4, 6-4.
 
Charlotte countered with victories at three singles positions. Ni Xi rallied past Darya Schwartzman 2-6, 6-3, 6-0 at No. 1, Shona Nakano defeated Uma Bakaityte 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3, and Prisca Abbas closed out Ema Mravcova 6-4, 7-5 at No. 6. Rice’s Francesca Maguina defeated Lucia Aranda 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 on court four.
 
That left the match tied 3-3, with the outcome resting on court 2. Divna Ratkovic held off Sara Suchankova 6-3, 6-3 to clinch the victory for Rice.
