Highlights
Nine American Athletic Conference cross country programs were in action over the weekend, as the league added six team and six individual titles to its 2018 slate. Temple and UConn raced on Friday, while UCF, Cincinnati, Memphis, SMU, Tulane, Tulsa and Wichita State each competed on Saturday morning. Memphis, SMU, Temple and Tulsa took home team titles.
- Aaron Bienenfeld placed fourth in his first collegiate cross country race and Hannah Markel was the top finisher for the women as Cincinnati competed in the John McNichols Invitational Saturday morning at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course in Terre Haute, Ind. For the second meet in a row, the men placed fourth overall as a team while the women duplicated their eighth-place showing in the team standings at the same venue that will be used later this season for the 2018 NCAA Great Lakes Region Championships.
- UCF jumped out to a strong start and raced to a second place finish at the UCF Knights Invitational. The Knights finished ahead of Florida Atlantic and Miami (Fla.) after coming in behind the two programs in their season-opening 5K race at Florida Atlantic on Aug. 31. UCF's 37 team points were just three away from the top squad, Florida International. Running as a pack in the front, UCF placed three runners in the top 10 and five in the top 15 with Victoria Jung leading the way to finishing third place overall.
- The UConn women landed in third place at the 6K Buffalo Stampede Invitational on Friday at Audubon Golf Course in Amherst, N.Y. Brianna Banks was the top-finishing Husky with a fifth place time of 21.57.3, an average mile time of 5:54. UConn closed out the meet with 77 points, finishing behind Cornell (40 points) and Vermont (50 points).
- Memphis' Matthew Viveiros won the men's individual crown and led the Tigers men's squad to the team title at the 2018 Rhodes College Invitational Saturday morning. The women's team placed third. The Memphis men's program won its fourth Rhodes College Invitational in the last seven seasons. With its third-place performance Saturday, the Tigers women's program also has top-three finishes in the event each of the last seven years.
- SMU won their second-straight event of the season with Hannah Miller winning another individual title at the Ken Garland Invite Saturday morning. Hannah Miller and senior Svenja Ojstersek took the first and second spots setting up the Mustangs for an incredible impressive result. Hannah's time of 16:36.3 was the third fastest 5K in program history. Svenja came in at 17:00.6, 40 seconds in front of any other runner. The Mustangs won by a margin of 39 points over second-place UNT. The 19 points the Mustangs scored was just four shy off the lowest possible score you can register at a meet.
- Temple’s men’s and women’s team each captured their second-straight titles, sweeping the top-three spots in their respective races at the Army West Point Open. The men’s team finished with 19 points ahead of Army West Point squad, who has received votes from the USTFCCCA this season. Zach Seiger led the Temple trio that swept the top three, finishing first with a time of 23:51.6. The women’s team also won with 19 points. Grace Moore crossed the finish line first with a time of 19:21.2.
- In his first collegiate race, Evans Kipchumba claimed the individual title at the LSU Invitational, highlighting the Green Wave's meet at Highland Road Park on Saturday morning. The Green Wave women placed fourth as a team with 119 points while the men took fifth place with 94 points. Kipchumba was excellent on Saturday morning for the men in their four-mile race, taking the individual title with a time of 20:25.40.
- Tulsa’s men's and women's cross country teams both claimed victory in their respective races at the Missouri Southern Stampede on Saturday morning. Reagan Hausmann won the women's 5K run with a time of 17:26.5 and TU placed four runners in the top 10 for a team score of 33, which was 107 points better than second-place Missouri State. Austin Del Rosso finished 10th (25:22.4) and he was followed by Adam Breaux (13th; 25:30.8), Cameron Field (14th; 25:36.8) and Robert Tully (26th; 25:56.2) to make up the team score.
- The Shocker women's team finished 11th at the 29th Annual Missouri Southern Stampede Saturday morning.Despite the majority of the cross country program resting this week, the women's team sent seven student-athletes and the men's team entered Ethan Kossover in the 29th Annual Missouri Southern Stampede.
