PROVIDENCE, R.I. – It was a banner day in cross country for the American Athletic Conference on Friday. The American membership saw two regional champions crowned, a combined six NCAA Championship automatic bids secured and 21 student-athletes earn all-region citations after competing in 2019 NCAA Division I regional championship meets across the United States.
 
Tulsa, the reigning cross country team champions of The American, earned automatic bids to the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships in Terre Haute, Indiana, on Nov. 23. In the men’s 10K race on Friday, the Golden Hurricane scored 37 points to win the NCAA Midwest Regional in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The race win marked the first regional championship victory for the Golden Hurricane in program history. Patrick Dever was the top individual finisher for Tulsa in third place with a time of 30:46.8, with Peter Lynch in sixth (30:56.4), Isaac Akers in eighth (31:03.6 and Cameron Field in ninth (31:05.3) as all-region selections in the race’s top 10. Scott Beattie rounded out all-region performers for Tulsa in 11th place with a time of 31:09.6.
 
The Tulsa women’s team scored 123 points on the strength of all five runners placing in the top 35 to finish as the runner-up of the NCAA Midwest Regional and claim an automatic NCAA selection. Caitlin Klopfer placed fifth with a time of 20:37.4 to lead the Golden Hurricane and earn all-region accolades, while Caroline Miller also notched all-region honors in 23rd place after crossing the finish line in 21:17.2.
 
Aaron Bienenfeld of Cincinnati continued his terrific season by adding another trophy to his standout 2019 campaign. The senior became just the second Bearcat runner in program history to win a regional championship (Eric Finan, 2010) by besting the field in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional men’s 10K at the Zimmer Championship Course in Madison, Wisconsin. Bienenfeld, the reigning American men’s cross country champion, posted a winning time of 29:59.9 to take the regional title and lead Cincinnati to a 16th-place team result. In the women’s 6K, Cincinnati logged an 11th-place showing that was keyed by Lauren Kemper in 45th place overall (21:25.6.).
 
Wichita State enjoyed an eighth-place team result on the women’s side at the NCAA Midwest Regional with 191 points, powered by two-time American champion Winny Koskei. Koskei finished in third place individually with a time of 20:34.9, qualifying for the NCAA Championships and an all-region scroll. Rebekah Topham was in 31st place for the Shockers with a time of 21:28.8. Wichita State claimed a 13th-place finish in the men’s 10K that also featured conference foe and regional champion Tulsa, as Ben Flowers earned all-region plaudits for the Shockers in 17th place (31:18.7).
 
Racing at the NCAA Northeast Regional in Buffalo, New York, UConn put together a ninth-place team showing in the women’s 6K representing The American. Mia Nahom finished fourth in the field (19:33.7) to lead the Huskies, securing all-region honors and punching her ticket to the NCAA Championships. Danielle Jordan crossed the finish line in 36th place with a time of 20:28.5 for UConn. The Huskies posted an eighth-place showing in the men’s 10K on the strength of all-region showings by Eric Van Der Els (15th place, 29:08.3), James Maniscalco (17th place, 29:12.6) and Will Brisman (18th place, 29:17.0).
 
At the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Temple put together an impressive outing that saw the Owls take fourth with an even 100 points in the men’s 10K. Kristian Jensen (14th place, 30:37.3), Harry Powell (17th place, 30:40.8), Zach Seiger (19th place, 30:44.7) and Kevin Lapsansky (22nd place, 30:46.1) all earned all-region scrolls for Temple. The Temple women’s squad posted a seventh-place finish in the 6K event with 246 total points. Millie Howard led the way for the Owls in 22nd place with a time of 20:46.0, and teammate Grace Moore was just behind in 24th after crossing the finish line in 20:46.7 to mark the second Temple all-region winner.
 
Houston turned in a team 11th-place showing in the men’s 10K at the NCAA South Central Regional at Agri Park in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Devin Vallejo-Bannister narrowly missed out on all-conference honors in 26th place with a time of 31:11.5, with GJ Reyna next to cross for the Cougars in 42nd place (31:34.2). Also competing in the meet on the men’s side was Tulane, who posted a 19th-place result on the strength of Carlos Zervigon crossing the finish line in 31:57.7. In the women’s 6K, Houston led three squads from The American in eighth place with 267 points. Darby Gauntt paced the Cougars in 21st place (21:38.9) to pick up an all-region citation. SMU finished in 16th place overall and was led by Tess Misgen in 52nd individually (22:34.0), while Tulane clocked in 19th with a 59th-place showing from Mckenzie Melius (22:43.7).  
 
East Carolina logged a team finish of 18th place in the men’s 10K and 19th place in the women’s 6K at the NCAA Southeast Regional at Panorama Farms in Charlottesville, Virginia. Joshua Spare led the way for the ECU men with a time of 31:15.5 for 50th place, and Ethan Hageman placed 80th with a time of 31:54.6. Nuria Tillo-Prats guided the Pirate women in the 6K with a time of 21:35.3 for 61st place, and Jenna Strange crossed the finish line with a time of 22:15.9 for 103rd place.
 
Three teams from The American competed at the NCAA South Regional at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Florida. In the men’s 10K race Memphis’ Payton Gleason recorded a 33rd-place finish in 31:24.0, while teammate Zachary Wyatt crossed the line in 32:00.9 for 63rd place. Memphis led the way for The American in the women’s 6K run in 19th place, led by Paige Sandwell in 95th place overall with a time of 22:17.5. USF checked in 22nd in the team field, as Natalie Walsh led the Bulls in 73rd place with a time of 21:47.3. UCF had four individuals entered in the race field, with Charlotte Crook pacing the Knights in 88th place (22:07.1).
