IRVING, Texas – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly cross country honors, for the competition week ending Sunday, September 5.
Men’s Athlete of the Week
Alec Sandusky * Gr. * Cincinnati
Sandusky dominated the men’s 6K to kick off his 2021 season at the Butler Twilight on Sept. 3 in Carmel, Indiana. Sandusky traversed The Hill at Northview course in 17:42.0 to take the individual title and lift Cincinnati to a team victory. Sandusky’s average mile split was 4:44.8 and his overall margin of victory was just over seven seconds.
Women’s Athlete of the Week
Yazmine Wright * Sr. * Wichita State
Wright shined in the first Wichita State start of 2021 in the women’s 5K at the JK Gold Classic on Sept. 4 in Augusta, Kansas. Wright navigated the RAFT Golf Course with a time of 17:34.1, the only athlete to run sub-17 minutes in the event, to win the individual meet and lift the Shockers to the team triumph. Wright’s average mile split in the near 40-second margin of victory was 5:39.3.
