ORLANDO, Fla. – A brace from Mikayla Morton sent No. 4-seeded Memphis (11-5-3) past No. 5-seeded UConn (7-9-3), 3-1, in the First Round of The American Women’s Soccer Championship.
Memphis advances to play top-seeded UCF (12-1-2) Friday at 7 p.m. ET in the semifinals. This marks the Tigers’ second straight trip to the conference championship semifinals.

Morton opened the scoring as she found the back of the net on a cross from Elizabeth Woerner at the 9’ mark. Less than 10 minutes into the second half, the Tigers doubled their lead as Woerner scored after Catherine Levasseur’s header hit the goal post. Just over a minute later, Morton recorded her second goal of the match on a penalty kick to boost Memphis’ lead to three.
Morton’s two goals were her ninth and 10th of the season, while Woerner tallied her team-leading 11th goal on the year. The Tigers have recorded a total of 43 goals through 19 games this season.
UConn had a 10-6 advantage in corner kicks, and cut the deficit to two goals (3-1) on Vivien Beil’s free kick in the 76
th minute. From there the Tigers’ defense would hold the Huskies offense, securing the victory and advancing Memphis to the Conference Championship semifinals.
Memphis goalkeeper Elizabeth Moberg made seven saves for the Tigers.
