UConn captures midweek win

The UConn softball team snapped a three-game losing skid on Tuesday, defeating UMass, 7-1, in non-conference action behind a strong outing from sophomore pitcher Jill Stockley and timely hitting from sophomore Kelli Bates.

The Huskies (15-22, 1-7 American) moved to 2-0 when playing at the Burrill Family Field this season, due in large part to Stockley’s performance. She stranded eight UMass runners over six innings, allowing just one run on six hits.

Six different players recorded hits for UConn, including Bates, who delivered a clutch two-out RBI single in the second inning – giving the Huskies an early 2-0 lead.

Redshirt senior Valerie Sadowl, senior Taylor Townsend and junior Ryne Nakama each added RBI in the victory. The Huskies plated four runs on a bases loaded walk, hit by pitch, and a pair of illegal pitches by UMass starter Candace Denis.
