Freshman Chloe Kerns helped the UConn softball team break out of its hitting woes with runners in scoring position on Friday, delivering a grand slam in the fifth inning to help the Huskies to an 8-3 win over UCF in the series opener.
Prior to Kerns' third home run of the season, the Huskies (16-26, 2-10 American) were just 5-for-25 (.200) as a team with the bases loaded in 2017. Trailing 3-1 at the time, her hit gave UConn a permanent lead.
Houston split a doubleheader at Memphis, falling 6-5 before claiming a 7-3 victory on Friday evening at Tigers Softball Complex.

Emily Watson tossed the first no-hitter of her career and first for Tulsa since 2014 as Tulsa shutout East Carolina 12-0 in five innings to open their three-game series on Friday evening. The Hurricane (34-13 Overall, 12-1 The American) posted 11 hits in the win as seven Tulsa batters recorded base-hits while four picked up multi-hit performances.
Tulsa's win over East Carolina (25-27 Overall, 5-11 The American) marked the eighth straight victory overall and eighth straight in league play.
