The 2017 University of Cincinnati women’s soccer season opened with another victory as true freshman Sophie Gorman found the back of the net in the 70’ to put the hosts on top while the Bearcats defense did its part to keep visiting Buffalo off the score board Friday night at Gettler Stadium. The victory pushes the Bearcats to 1-0-0 on the year.
The East Carolina women’s soccer team won 3-2 against Dayton. Ashley Kendrot scored the first goal of the season for ECU, assisted by Courtney Cash. Dayton equalized the score at 1-1 before halftime. Six minutes into the second period Cash scored off a short cross from Jenna Geist to lift the Pirates to a 2-1 lead. Dayton scored again on a cross that came from a free kick to tie match at 2-2. Mariana Shurina secured the win for ECU in the 88', assisted by Tori Riggs and Cash.
The Houston Cougars shutout Texas Southern 3-0 in its opening match. Georgi Dolence scored the first goal to put the Cougs up 1-0. 53' Madison Soileau extended the lead to 2-0. The last goal of the match was an unassited shot over the goalkeepers head from Selena Peters.
Memhis, the 2017 American Athletic Conference preaseason favorite, tabbed a commanding 3-0 win over Samford. Elizabeth Woerner scored twice. The first goal came at the 11:14 mark. Woerner connected again five minutes later off a cross pass from Stasia Malin. Clarissa Larisey finished at the back post from a low cross made by Stasia Malin.
The USF women's soccer team clawed back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Charlotte, 3-2, in overtime of its seson opener. The Bulls outshot Charlotte 24-7, and held the 49ers scoreless 93 minutes following their goals. Evelyne Viens, the American preseason Offensive Player of the Year drove the winning goal deep in the net off a pass from freshman Sarah Harrison in double- overtime play.
SMU defeated No. 17 Arkansas 1-0. The win is the first against a Top-25 team since September 23, 2011 (1-0 vs. No. 19 UCF). Preseason All-Conference Team selection Claire Oates scored the lone goal of the game to lift the Mustangs to a 1-0-0 start to the 2017 season. Oates now has 21 career goals and Catie Brown recorded her fifth career shutout.
In its thrilling season opener, Temple edged out Fairleigh Dickinson with a 3-2 overtime win. The match, held at FDU, was delayed by two hours at the start due to heavy rain. It was freshman midfielder Julia Dolan who saved the day for Temple, scoring in the 92nd minute to lift the Owls to their overtime victory.
The Tulsa women’s soccer team battled Central Michigan to a 1-1 double-overtime tie in the season opener on Friday evening in the Jayhawk Invitational at Rock Chalk Park in Lawrence, Kan. Madison Costner struck first for the Chippewas as she scored on a breakaway off a pass from Sarah Mitchell at the 27:58 mark. Addyson Guthrie evened the score in the 64
th minute as she drilled a shot off the cross bar into the goal off a 30-yard pass from Reagan Whitlow.
The UCF women's soccer team battled No. 4 South Carolina in its season opener, but dropped a 2-0 decision to the Gamecocks at Stone Stadium. Freshman Madison Murnin and senior Kathellen Sousa made their UCF debuts in the opener, with both earning their first starts as Knights. Vera Varis and Chloe N'Gazi split time in goal. Varis, who earned the starting nod, recorded one save while N'Gazi made three saves in the second half.
