A pair of first half goals led the UCF women’s soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Stetson on Sunday afternoon at the UCF Soccer Complex. UCF is 1-1-0 overall. The Knights earned their first shutout victory of the season. Morgan Ferrara scored the first goal for the Knights. In her first action of the season for UCF, Jessica Taylor scored the second goal to double the advantage in the 43
rd minute. The Knights defense held Stetson to just two shots in the contest.
The Cincinnati women’s soccer team shutout Boston University in a, 2-0, win at Gettler Statium. The win this afternoon tallies the Bearcats second straight shutout to begin the 2017 season 2-0-0. Jaycie Brown scored first at the 13:03 mark. That goal marked the 17
th time since the start of the 2013 season that UC has scored a goal in the opening 14 minutes of play. Vanessa Gilles doubled the Bearcats score 15 minutes later. The UC defense has not allowed a goal this year.
The Houston Cougars topped Northern Arizona University, 4-1, in Sunday night’s match at Carl Lewis International Complex. Freshman Jazmin Grant scored two goals within the first 10 minutes of the first half, while Hannah Dauzat added a goal to the score at the 71
st minute. Kaitlyn Wild connected between the frame at the 87
th minute lift the Cougs to its 4-1 finish.
The Memphis women’s soccer team forced a second-consecutive shutout in their, 3-0, win over Little Rock at the Mike Ross Soccer Complex Sunday night. Jessica Lisi’s first goal of the season was unassisted as she forced a turnover and launched a shot from outside the box. Lisi’s goal in the 38
th minute gave the Tigers a 1-0 edge at the half. Marie Levasseur scores on a pass from Catherine Levasseur to lift the Tigers, 2-0. Mikayla Morton’s first goal of the season off of the throw by Samantha Murphy boosted Memphis’ lead, 3-0. The Tigers improve to 2-0 to open the 2017 season.
USF wraps up opening weekend at Corbett Stadium undefeated with a, 3-0, win over American University. The Bulls outshot American 27-6. In the 25
th minute, Kylee Burroughs scored to lift USF to a 1-0 lead. Andrea Hauksdottir converted a penalty kick, putting the bulls up by two. Just 13 minutes later, Evelyne Viens scored the third and final goal of the match from sophomore forward Aubrey Megraph’s quick, short pass. The Bulls defense was key, holding American to just six shots.
The Mustangs tied No. 16 Oklahoma, 0-0, in double-overtime play late Sunday evening. At the half, the Mustangs had outshot the Sooners, 7-1, and lead 3-1 in corner kicks. SMU’s offense continued to lead in the shot column into the second period outshooting the Sooners, 11-5 (20-8), at the 68 minute mark. The Mustang defense managed to hold Oklahoma to zero shots on goal with 16 minutes left in the second half. SMU goalkeeper, Catie Brown, made the last save of the game in double-overtime with five seconds remaining to keep No. 16 Oklahoma from scoring. The Mustangs are 1-0-1 on the season.
Temple ended up suffering its first loss of the season to La Salle, by a final score of 2-0. Both defenses played extremely well in the first 45 minutes as it was scoreless at the half. Temple came out in attack mode for the second half, applying pressure on the Explorers defense as the Owls attempted five corners in the period compared to the Explorers one. The Owls are now 1-1-0 on the season.
The Tulsa women’s soccer team fell, 3-1, to the No. 22 Nebraska Sunday morning in the Kansas Invitational at Rock Chalk Park in Lawrence Kan. The Golden Hurricane moved to 0-1-1 on the season. Anna Williams headed in a cross from freshman Addyson Guthrie to even the score, 1-1. Rebecca Defer played all 90 minutes in goal and recorded five saves.
