DALLAS - Ben Hicks threw two touchdown passes to James Proche, and Ke'Mon Freeman rushed for two touchdowns to lead SMU to a 44-21 win against Arkansas State Saturday night at Ford Stadium.
The Mustangs improved to 3-1 with the win as SMU used a 20-0 second quarter to build a 30-14 halftme lead.
SMU trailed 14-10 in the second quarter, but the Mustangs took the lead for good when wide receiver Courtland Sutton scored on a 2-yard run from the wildcat formation. Freeman followed with the first of his two touchdowns with 3:32 left in the first half as he raced in from 35 yards.
Hicks connected with Proche for a 49-yard touchdown with 1:04 left before halftime to give SMU a 16-point lead.
Freeman's second touchdown of the day came midway through the third quarter and gave the Mustangs a 37-14 cushion.
Hicks completed 16 of 32 passes for 266 yards and two touchdowns witout an interception. Xavier Jones rushed for 146 yards on 19 carries, while Proche had three catches for 131 yards and two touchdowns.
