Memphis 11, Jackson State 0
Memphis bounced back with a commanding 11-0 victory over Jackson State at the Northwestern State Tournament Friday. The Memphis offense came around in game two and was coupled by a stellar outing in the circle by Molly Smith. The Tigers strung together four hits in the third inning including Kyler Trosclair Klatt's second triple of the day to take a 3-0 lead over Jackson State. Four more hits in the fourth led to eight total runs as Memphis broke open the flood gates against Jackson State. In the top of the fifth, Bayleigh Wisher saw her first action in the circle and helped finish off the first Memphis no-hitter since the 2012 season. Smith finished with 11 strikeouts in her second win of the year.
ECU 4, Townson 3; ECU 3, Saint Joseph's 0
ECU picked up a doubleheader sweep in defeating Towson 4-3 in nine innings and Saint Joseph's 3-0. The Pirates rapped out a season-high 11 hits in the walkoff win over Towson in the home opener. Redshirt sophomore Tate McCellan produced a RBI single and senior infielder Meredith Burroughs added a sacrifice fly to put ECU in the lead 2-0 after one complete. A RBI double by senior infielder Karlie Smith made it 3-0 before the Tigers answered with a run in the top of the fourth to cut the Pirate lead to 3-1. Olivia Narron laid down a bunt single and reached second on a throwing error to lead off the bottom of the ninth. She then stole third and scored on a fielder's choice play with freshman infielder Ashleigh Inae at the plate to give the Purple and Gold the win.
The Pirates won the nightcap behind the first career complete-game shutout by freshman RHP Whitney Sanford who recorded a personal collegiate-best eight strikeouts. Inae was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the first. She then stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. After the Hawks recorded consecutive outs, McClellan roped a double to left field to score Inae and redshirt senior catcher Alex Mycek doubled down the left field line to plate McClellan and give ECU a 2-0 advantage going into the second. Mycek would add a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth to provide the final margin of victory.
Houston 6, Ole Miss 0
Houston Softball team shutout No. 15/18 Ole Miss, 6-0, on Friday afternoon at Nancy Almaraz Stadium as part of the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge. In the circle, Trystan Melancon improved to 2-1 on the season. The native of Tomball, Texas, limited Ole Miss to five hits across six innings. Savannah Heebner pitched a scoreless seventh, recording two strikeouts to seal the shutout. Sarah Barker highlighted the offense by going a perfect-4-for-4 with a double and walk. The four hits are a career high. Freshman first baseman Tierrah Williams also turned in a career day with three hits in a 3-for-4 showing, while senior left fielder Kaylin Crumpton (2-for-3), junior right fielder Maya Thomas (2-for-4) and sophomore second baseman Arielle James (2-for-5) each finished two hits, respectively.
UCF 13, LIU Brooklyn 7
After falling to Northern Iowa in its first match up, UCF rebounded in the final game of night, defeating LIU Brooklyn 13-7. The Knight began to climb out of a 0-7 deficit in the third inning scoring five runs. Cassady Brewer led off the inning with a single up the middle, which was followed by a double from freshman Kairlyn Jensen. The ensuing players kept the pressure on with Jazmine Esparza and Denali Schappacher knocking in a pair each. The score remained 7-5 in favor of the Blackbirds until Schappacher drove in her third RBI of the game in the fifth. UCF eventually took the lead in the sixth on a two-out single by Kyra Klarkowski, which scored both Courtney Rotton and Kendyl Lange. Klarkowski would score on the ensuing at bat with Esparza doubling to right center. Aubrey Johnson capped off the scoring in the sixth with a two-run home run to left field, making it 11-7. The Knights tallied two more insurance runs in the seventh to earn their fourth victory of the season, 13-7.
USF 5, Marshall 1
USF defeated Marshall 5-1 to split thier first two games Friday. Freshman Georgina Corrick (2-1) pitched all seven innings against Marshall. The Sanford, Fla., native fanned seven, and allowed just five hits and one earned run. A trio of juniors highlighted the second inning when Macy Cook lead off for USF with a walk, followed by a double from Samantha Worrell. The pair was batted in by Lindsey Devitt who hit the gap for a single between center and right field. Senior Cassidy Boyle hit a double hard down the left field line for two RBI in the third inning, scoring the final two runs in a 5-1 victory over Thundering Herd.
Wichita State 3, Sam Houston State 0
Wichita State softball team defeated Sam Houston State 3-0 in game two of the Bearkat Classic with Bailee Nickerson going 3-for-3 at the plate and pitcher Bailey Lange striking out six. Nickerson again led off with a hit in the fifth, singling through the left side with an error on a Mackenzie Wright swing getting her home.Ryleigh Buck singled to get on base, Derrico reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases, then Perrigan flew out to center field to get Wright home and make it two. In the top of the seventh, Buck led off with a single with Derrico crushing one to deep left field for her second double of the evening. Caitlin Bingham flew out to center field to get Buck home and make it three. The bottom half ended with a smart double play by Kaylee Huecker tagging a runner and then throwing to Buck at first with Lange's sixth strikeout finishing the game.
