Highlights
Wichita State 7, Northern Colorado 1; Wichita State 4, Seton Hall 3
Wichita State defeated Northern Colorado, 7-1, in game one of a doubleheader Saturday. Mackenzie Wright led the Shockers' offense going 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Bailey Lange started in the circle, pitchrf five innings and struck out seven. Wright led off with a single through the middle. Ryleigh Buck bunted to get Wright to third with an error getting her home and Buck to second. Bailee Nickerson reached on another error with Buck scoring before Laurie Derrico walked. Caitlin Bingham reached on the third error of the inning to load the bases before Lange ground out to get Nickerson round. Asea Webber singled to get Derrico home and upping the score to 4-0. Morgan Palmer started the second by drawing a walk with Wright doubling deep down the left field line to get runners at second and third. Nickerson flew out to center field to get Palmer home and making the score 5-0. Lange struck out two in the bottom half to keep the Bears off the scoreboard. In the third, Bingham singled to left-center, advanced to second on a wild pitch, to third on a passed ball and scored on a muffed throw at third base. Lange singled then stole second and eventually scored on a passed ball to make it 7-0. The Shockers couldn't get on the board in the fourth or fifth. Lange struck out another three but a double got a Bear home to bring the final score to 7-1.
The Shockers rallied from a three-run deficit to defeat Seton Hall, 4-3, on day two of the Bearkat Classic. Derrio and Buck led the offense, both going 2-for-3 with Derrico having two RBIs. In the third, Wichita State earned its first run of the game when Palmer singled to the shortstop and Buck doubled to bring her home. Madison Perrigan led off with a walk and Cassidy Kelsheimer coming in to pinch run. Kaylee Huecker hit a sacrifice bunt to get her to second with Palmer then reaching first on an error. Buck singled and beat out the throw to load the bases before Bailee Nickerson reached first on another error with Kelsheimer getting home to cut the score to 3-2. Laurie Derrico smashed the ball at the pitcher in the next at-bat to get Buck and Palmer home and complete the comeback.
ECU 3, Saint Joseph's 1
ECU extended its win streak to four games Saturday, defeating Saint Joseph's 3-1 on day two of the Pirate Clash at the ECU Softball Stadium. the Pirate offense came to life in the bottom of the third frame. Senior infielder Karlie Smith lined a single up the middle before redshirt sophomore Tate McCellan followed suit with a single through the left side. The runners moved up on a groundout before senior infielder Meredith Burroughs drove Smith home with a sacrifice fly. McClellan stole third and Halo walked to put ECU runners on the corners. Junior outfielder Ashley Weingartz then hit a RBI single to left field and freshman infielder Ashleigh Inae later drew a walk with the bases loaded to leave the Purple and Gold with a 3-0 lead after three complete. The Hawks rallied in the bottom of the seventh, scoring a run on a sacrifice fly to bring the final score to 3-1.
Tulsa 2, Butler 1
Emily Watson recorded a season-high 11 strikeouts to help Tulsa defeat Butler, 2-1, after a 6-0 setback to No. 6/8 Texas A&M on Saturday, the second day of the Texas A&M Invitational. Tori Stafford helped provide the offense with a 2-for-4 night at the plate with a double and an RBI, while Morgan Neal also plated a run. Butler got its run in the bottom of the first on Alyssa Lach's RBI single for a quick 1-0 lead and that's where the score stood until Tulsa evened the ledger in the fifth. Julia Hollingsworth reached on a fielder's choice and raced to third on Stafford's single to left. The junior came around to score on Neal's RBI grounder to make it 1-1. In the top of the seventh, Hollingsworth ripped a one-out double down the right field line and scored on Stafford's double to deep center. Working with a 2-1 lead, Watson picked up two more strikeouts in the bottom of the inning and got a fly ball to end the game and secure the win.
UCF 2, FAMU 1
After falling to Texas Tech, 6-2, UCF rebounded against Florida A&M with 2-1 victory. FAMU jumped out to an early lead, scoring a run in the first inning, but UCF would respond in the third behind the bat of Denali Schappacher. The freshman streamed a one-out triple down the right field line, giving the Knights their first true scoring chance of the game. After a Greenwell bunt single, Schappacher would advance home on a snapback through to third that sailed into left field, evening the game at one all. In the bottom of the sixth, Jensen led off the inning with a hard fought walk and would be pinch ran for by Erin Emanuel. The ensuing batter was Rotton, who singled the center, and Emanuel blazed around the bases, ending up at third with no outs. The junior college transfer would be driven in on a sacrifice fly by Jazmine Esparza, putting the Knights up 2-1.
