Bryant 4, USF 1
Georgina Corrick had an impressive nine-strikeout appearance in USF's 4-1 loss to Bryant on Sunday, just one day after the freshman set her new career high at 10. The Sanford, Fla. native and Great Britain National Team pitcher has been a dependable force for the Bulls this season. Just in the USF tournament, Corrick tossed 20 strikeouts in 11.2 innings of work. The rookie faced 19 batters in the tournament finale, sending almost half back to the dugout. The Bulldogs got an early jump on USF (7-10) with a home run in the second inning, but a Lindsey Devitt double scored senior Cassidy Boyle in the bottom of the frame to tie up the game, 1-1. Bryant responded with three runs in the third inning but was held scoreless the rest of the way.
Florida Gulf Coast 2, UConn 1
Junior pitcher Jill Stockley continued her impressive weekend for the UConn softball team on Sunday, but a lack of offense led to an extra-inning 2-1 loss to Florida Gulf Coast in the final game of the FGCU/Four Points by Sheraton Invitational. The Huskies (7-7) finished the weekend with a 2-3 record, dropping their second-consecutive to FGCU (13-0). The Eagles scored the game-winning run in the eighth off Stockley (2-3), despite her brilliance in the circle. Down 1-0 in the sixth, UConn loaded the bases with no outs after hits by freshman Hollis Wivell and Carli Cutler, plus a walk from sophomore Devon Casazza however, the Huskies managed just one run on the sac fly by Glatczak, squeezed between a pair of fielder’s choice groundouts. Olivia Sappington and Cutler combined to go 11-for-31 (.355) at the plate this weekend, accounting for a home run, double and five RBI. In addition, Wivell and fellow freshman Briana Marcelino got significant playing time – hitting .364 and .375, respectively, in the five games.
Louisiana 6, Memphis 3
The University of Memphis softball team dropped a heartbreaker Sunday afternoon to No. 15 UL Lafayette by a score of 6-3 in 11 innings. It was the first extra inning game for the Tigers this season as they fall to 7-5 on the year.UL Lafayette struck first in the top of the second inning, but the Tigers promptly answered with two during their next plate appearance on an RBI single to left by Tyler Johnson. Memphis added one more in the fourth before the Ragin' Cajuns came back to tie up the contest in the sixth. It took five more innings to settle the game when UL Lafayette put up three in the 11
th. Molly Smith pitched in 10.2 of the 11 innings and struck out two in her second loss of the season.
UCF 5, Jacksonville 3
The UCF Knights capped of the Green and Gold Classic and picked up it's 600th program win with a 5-3 victory over the Jacksonville Dolphins Sunday afternoon. Senior Courtney Rotton delivered her first home run of the season bringing in two runs and Aubrey Johnson collected a pair of hits and two RBI. Alea White
got the start and recorded her sixth win throwing seven innings allowing eight hits, three earned runs, and two walks. The Knights bats quickly came alive in the first inning as Denali Schappacher was hit by a pitch for the first baserunner of the afternoon. Megan Greenwell stepped into the box and instantly smacked a single through the left side, and with a Dolphin miscue, both runners were able to move into scoring position. Johnson then drilled a single up the middle scoring Schappacher and Greenwell bringing up Kaitlyn Jensen who blasted a double to left field plating Johnson. Jacksonville evened up the score, 3-3, in the fifth inning after slicing a single to right and scoring a run. UCF secured the victory in the top of the sixth after Jensen drew a walk to bring Rotton to the plate who blasted a shot over the left field fence to make it a 5-3 win.
Saint Francis 7, ECU 2
Saint Francis scored seven unanswered runs in the final three innings to erase an early deficit and defeat ECU 7-2 Sunday afternoon at the ECU Softball Stadium. The contest was the finale of the Pirate Invitational. The first three innings went by with little offense from both sides, but the Pirates put up their first real threat in the bottom of the fourth. ndra Ziemba pounded a pitch over the left fielder's head to score two and give ECU a 2-0 advantage. The Red Flash answered with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth to knot the score then plated five runs on four hits to seize control. Madison Cabell capped the scoring off with a two-run home run to center.
Wichita State 5, Virginia Tech 2
The Wichita State softball team scored five runs on eight hits to defeat the Virginia Tech Hokies 5-2 to close out the Texas Invitational. The Hokies struck first in the second inning after a throwing error got a runner to first with two walks loading the bases. Hailey Martinez replaced Bailey Klitzke
in the circle with two smart plays at home getting out of the inning with minimal damage. Wright threw to home to tag out a runner with a single into left field getting the one Hokie home but a huge throw from Morgan Palmer reached home plate for Madison Perrigan
to tag the second runner and getting out of the jam. In the third, the Shocker bats took over as they went through the entire batting lineup. Bailee Nickerson led off being hit by a pitch with Wright singling for the second time into center field. Ryleigh Buck reached on an error to load the bases and Asea Webber drew a walk to tie the game. Caitlin Bingham singled through the left for the second time to get two home before Perrigan doubled to get Webber around and pushing the lead to 4-1.
Tulsa 1, Florida Atlantic 0
Emily Watson tossed a one-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts and Julia Hollingsworth drove in the game's only run as Tulsa closed play at the FAU "Strike-Out Cancer" Tournament with a 1-0 win over host Florida Atlantic on Sunday. Watson retired the first 10 batters that she faced and after a one-out single in the fourth, she sat down the final 11 hitters for the Golden Hurricane (7-7). The stellar effort capped an impressive weekend for the senior as she went 3-0 with a pair of shutouts and 30 strikeouts against just two walks without a run allowed. The Hurricane and Owls (7-7) combined for just three hits over the first four innings before Tulsa broke through for the game's only run in the top of the fifth. With two outs, Jesse Smith reached on an infield single and advanced to second via a throwing error on the play. Hollingsworth then followed with a single to left that brought Smith home. That was all that Watson needed as she retired the side in order in the fifth, sixth and seventh and closed out the game with a strikeout to improve to 5-2 on the campaign.
Houston 7, UTSA 0
The University of Houston Softball team shutout UTSA, 7-0, in the finale of the Houston Hilton Plaza Invitational on Saturday afternoon at Cougar Softball Stadium. With the win, the Cougars improve to 8-4 overall, while the Roadrunners fall to 7-5. Houston, having completed the sweep of the tournament field, also improved to 4-0 at home. In the circle, junior Presley Bell improved to 1-1 behind her first shutout of the season and third overall of her career. The native of Liberty, Texas, limited UTSA to just three hits, while walking none and recording two strikeouts. The Cougars used two big innings to score all of their runs, plating two in the bottom of the third and five in the fifth. Junior right fielder Maya Thomas led Houston and tied her career high with three hits in a 3-for-4 effort. Cougars Sarah Barker (2-for-2), Sarah Queen (2-for-3), Lindsey Stewart (2-for-3) and Tierrah Williams (2-for-3) all turned in multi-hit performances, respectively, while Arielle James, Barker and Williams each collected doubles.
