Highlights
- Five teams enjoyed 2-0 starts in their final regular season tournaments, as UCF (8-3), UConn (8-4), Houston (13-1), USF (10-1) and Tulane (11-3) will look to complete weekend sweeps on Saturday. The Knights, Bulls, Cougars, Green Wave and Tigers (7-5) have each one at least five-straight matches. The conference combined for a 13-4 record, securing a winning mark against nonconference foes on each Friday in 2018. Collectively, the league is .657 (88-46) against other conferences this season. Nine of the 12 conference teams hold winning records to enter their final regular season nonconference tournament matches on Saturday.
Houston 3, Eastern Michigan 1 | Houston 3, Duquesne 1
Houston maintained the top record in The American after picking up a pair of four-set wins over Eastern Michigan and Duquesne, respectively at the RMU Sheraton Invitational. The Cougars have surpassed its win total from last season, having won five-consecutive matches, all of which being four-set contests. Houston wraps up its nonconference slate against Robert Morris Saturday morning.
UCF 3, Alabama State 0 | UCF 3, Florida Gulf Coast 0
UCF extended its winning streak to five-straight matches with sweeps over Alabama State and Florida Gulf Coast on the opening day of the Volleyknights Invitational. The Black and Gold posted a pair of .300-plus offensive outings, totaling .371 over the two matches, while limiting Alabama State and FGCU to sub-.100 clips at the net. McKenna Melville recorded 35 kills over six sets and notched a .435 attack percentage in both matches. The Knights wrap up their regular season nonconference slate Saturday afternoon against Yale.
Stephen F. Austin 3, Wichita State 1 | Wichita State 3, North Texas 0
Wichita State (5-5) split its Friday action with a four-set loss to Stephen F. Austin and a sweep over North Texas to start off the North Texas Challenge. The Shockers will face another tough opponent on Saturday when they take on No. 14 Cal Poly. Tabitha Brown tallied a match-high 13 kills in the win over North Texas, while Alex Koon also reached double-figure kills with 10, while hitting .500.
USF 3, North Dakota 0 | USF 3, New Orleans 0
USF continued its dominant stretch, extending its winning streak to seven with a perfect 2-0 opening day at the USF Classic behind straight-set triumphs against North Dakota and New Orleans. The Bulls were powered outside hitter Jac'cara Walker in a 3-0 win against North Dakota. The transfer had a match high 19 kills without any errors, hitting .594 to go along 10 digs for her third double-double of the season. Head coach Courtney Draper then earned her 100th career win in a third-consecutive sweep victory over New Orleans. The Bulls hit .356 in the win. USF is off to its best start since 1996.
UConn 3, Holy Cross 0 | UConn 3, Rutgers 1
UConn (8-4) is off to a 2-0 start at the Dog Pound Challenge after wins over Holy Cross and Rutgers at Gampel Pavilion. Danielle Cabel and Genna Florig led the way with 10 kills apiece in a 3-0 win over the Crusaders, while Caylee Parker had 22 kills to lead the Huskies past Rutgers in four sets. UConn and St. John’s take the court at 1 p.m. ET for the tournament title on Saturday.
Cincinnati 3, Eastern Kentucky 0 | Indiana 3, Cincinnati 2
After sweeping Eastern Kentucky, Cincinnati (8-3) went the distance with Indiana, but came up short in a 3-2 loss at home. The Bearcats are 5-2 in five-set matches this season. Outside hitter Jordan Thompson continued her outstanding performance at the net, reaching the 30-kill mark for the fourth time in three weeks. Thompson pummeled 35 kills, which ranks No. 3 all-time in American Athletic Conference history, against Indiana. Thompson leads the nation in kills and points this season. Cincinnati hit a season-high .315 in the win over Eastern Kentucky, while holding the Colonels to hitting .033. Thompson led the Bearcats with 15 kills and a .542 hitting percentage. The Queen City Classic wraps up on Saturday when Cincinnati hosts Xavier in a rivalry contest.
Tulane 3, Little Rock 2 | Tulane 3, Villanova 1
Tulane finished day one of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Classic with two wins, defeating Little Rock in an intense five-set match before beating Villanova in four sets. Freshman outside hitter Makala Heidelberg tallied double-doubles in both matches, adding 13 kills and 14 digs against Little Rock and 11 kills and 21 digs against Villanova. The Green Wave are set to face Clemson on Saturday at 3 p.m. ET in Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse, wrapping up the weekend tournament and the team's nonconference play.
Illinois State 3, Tulsa 1
Tulsa (7-3) dropped its match against Illinois State in the first contest of the Marquette Invitational. Taylor Horsfall finished the match with a season-high 30 digs. Elyse Savadove, Callie Cook and Rachel Moore all recorded 10 or more kills in the defeat. The Golden Hurricane will play its second and final match of the Marquette Invitational tomorrow at 2 p.m. ET, as the team takes on host and No. 21 Marquette in Milwaukee.
Maryland 3, Temple 0
Temple (1-9) suffered its ninth-straight loss after Maryland hit .396 on the way to a 3-0 win at the Cheery & White Challenge. The Owls were led by Irem Asci and Gem Grimshaw who each had seven kills. Temple will play two matches on Saturday when it hosts New Hampshire and Princeton.
SMU 3, Abilene Christian 2
Freshman Hannah Jacobs scored a season-high 21 kills while hitting .289, and senior Brittany Adams recorded her third-straight double-double with 15 kills and 18 digs, to lead SMU (3-6) to a 3-2 win against Abilene Christian at the Mustangs’ DoubleTree Invitational. Freshman Lily Heim finished with 30 assists and 12 digs for her first career double-double. SMU hosts LSU Saturday at 3 p.m. ET in the final match of DoubleTree Invitational.
