PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Cincinnati outside hitter Jordan Thompson became the second player in American Athletic Conference history to be named Sports Imports/AVCA Player of the Week, as announced by the organization Tuesday. The only other time a conference student-athlete was selected national player of the week was on September 22, 2015, when SMU’s Avery Acker won the award.
Thompson is coming off another tremendous week, where she averaged a conference-high 7.45 kills and 8.45 points per set, while hitting .394. She set a league record with 32 kills in a four-set win over crosstown rival Xavier and knocked down 35 kills in a five-set match against Indiana. She has reached the 30-kill mark five times over the past three weeks. Thompson also averaged 1.45 digs per set with nine blocks and six service aces, earning a spot on the All-Queen City Classic team. She currently leads the nation in kills (318) and points (350), as well as kills (6.24) and points (6.86) per set.
The American’s teams will begin conference play this weekend with matches on Friday, September 21 and Sunday, September 23.
