Cincinnati 3, UCF 0 (25-19, 26-24, 25-20)
Cincinnati (11-4, 3-0) assumed solo first place in the American Athletic Conference East Division, sweeping defending conference champion UCF (9-6, 2-1) on Friday at Fifth Third Arena in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Bearcats downed the Knights 25-19, 26-24, 25-20 in the debut volleyball broadcast of the 2019 season on ADN.
Cincinnati hit .384 as a team for the match, which included a .471 mark in the opening set. Jordan Thompson shined with a match-high 28 kills and 13 digs, adding two service aces for the Bearcats. Maria Mallon chipped in 16 kills and 10 assists for Cincinnati, while Armania Heckenmueller logged 48 assists along with five digs.
McKenna Melville posted a team-high 10 kills for UCF, as Makenzie Kuchmaner added 13 digs to pace the Knights. Erin Olson contributed 12 assists and five digs in defeat for UCF.
Houston 3, Tulane 2 (25-22, 18-25, 17-25, 25-16, 15-12)
Houston (9-9, 3-0) won its fourth straight match in five sets, and its third straight in comeback fashion, by taking the final two frames on Friday against Tulane (12-4, 2-1) in New Orleans. The Cougars stunned the host Green Wave 25-22, 18-25, 17-25, 25-16, 15-12 to take over first place alone in the American Athletic Conference West Division.
Kendall Haywood guided the Houston offense with a match-high 13 kills, while Alexis Cheatum contributed 11 kills, three digs and four blocks to the Cougar cause. Katie Karbo continued her stellar season with a match-high 26 digs in the triumph.
Yvette Burcescu’s 11 kills paced Tulane on offense, with Lexie Douglas added nine kills, 17 digs and five blocks. Kaylie McHugh checked in with 21 digs for the Green Wave.
UConn 3, Temple 1 (21-25, 25-16, 25-20, 27-25)
UConn (8-7, 2-1) bounced back from a setback in the first set to sweep the final three frames against Temple (9-5, 0-3) on Friday afternoon in Philadelphia. The Huskies emerged from the road contest with a 21-25, 25-16, 25-20, 27-25 triumph over the Owls.
Caylee Parker guided UConn with a double-double that featured 16 kills and 15 digs, while Genna Florig chipped in 11 kills, seven total blocks and a pair of digs. Isabelle Peterson recorded 12 kills and three digs in the victory for the Huskies.
Katerina Papazoglou recorded a match-high 22 kills and added 11 digs for Temple, and Averi Salvador turned in 22 digs. Tyler Lindgren posted 32 assists and nine digs.
East Carolina 3, USF 0 (25-14, 25-19, 25-14)
East Carolina (13-3, 1-2) picked up its first conference win of the season by way of a home sweep at the hands of USF (7-10, 1-2) on Friday night in Greenville, North Carolina. The Pirates stopped the Bulls 25-14, 25-19, 25-14.
Sydney Kleinman starred for ECU with 19 kills and a .586 attack percentage, and Bri Wood chipped in 11 kills and eight digs. Brandee Markwith logged a double-double of 10 assists and 10 digs in the win for the Pirates.
Lindsay Pliapol finished the match with 14 kills to lead USF, while Lauren LaBeck chipped in 26 assists and four digs.
Wichita State 3, Memphis 2 (26-28, 25-18, 27-29, 25-19, 15-12)
Wichita State (4-11, 1-2) snapped an eight-match skid with a five-set victory at Memphis (11-4, 0-3), battling back from a pair of deficits against the host Tigers. The Shockers took the win in a 26-28, 25-18, 27-29, 25-19, 15-12 final.
Emma Wright finished the contest with a team-high 16 kills along with six block assists for Wichita State, while Megan Taflinger added 15 kills and Brylee Kelly a career-high 14 kills. Kara Brown logged a match-high 23 digs.
Hannah Flowers recorded 16 kills and six block assists in defeat for Memphis, and Meredith Wallace posted a double-double with 11 kills and 10 digs.
SMU 3, Tulsa 2 (18-25, 25-13, 25-22, 23-25, 17-15)
SMU (8-5, 1-2) emerged from a rough and tumble affair with Tulsa (9-7, 2-1) on Friday night in Dallas, handing the Golden Hurricane their first conference loss following a five-set thriller. The Mustangs secured an 18-25, 25-13, 25-22, 23-25, 17-15 triumph at Moody Coliseum.
Hannah Jacobs paced SMU with a match-high 19 kills, with Alex Glover contributing 16 kills and six total blocks. Montana Watts led the Mustangs with 25 digs in the win.
Dilara Gedikoglu finished just shy of a double-double for Tulsa, notching 20 kills and nine digs. Taylor Horsfall turned in a match-high 28 digs and five assists for the Golden Hurricane in defeat.
