USF pitchers held Texas State to three hits, and AnaMarie Bruni hit a three-run homer over the right field fence to give USF its second shutout win this season. In the bottom of the second inning, Lindsey Devitt and Meghan Sheehan each drew walks before Bruni connected on her three-run shot for her first career home run. Georgina Corrick, Nicole Doyle and Cheyenne Eggens combined for the Bulls first shutout of the season with Corrick earning her fifth win of the season and Eggens earning her first save of the year. The trio held the Bobcats to three hits and three walks while combining to record five strikeouts.
Houston 8, Kennesaw State 0
UCF completed the weekend sweep of the Knights Classic Sunday afternoon after defeating Louisiana Tech, 5-2. All five of UCF’s runs came with two outs in the fifth inning. Karissa Ornelas, Takiya London, Jazmine Esparza, and Cassady Brewer all brought in runs in the fifth inning to secure the victory over Louisiana Tech. In her second start of the weekend, Breanna Vasquez threw her fourth complete game of the season as she allowed four hits and struck out six.
Houston 8, Kennesaw State 0
Houston completed a weekend sweep on Sunday afternoon, taking down Kennesaw State 8-0 in six innings. At the plate, Rachel Hill and Brooke Vannoy launched their first home runs of the season with their back-to-back shots in the second inning. In the circle, Savannah Heebner tossed her second shutout of the season and 24th of her career, striking out six batters in the process.
Tulsa 8, Sam Houston State 1
Alexis Perry hit two doubles and drove in three runs, while Samantha Pochop went the distance in the circle and recorded 11 strikeouts as Tulsa closed play in the Texas Invitational with an 8-1 win over Sam Houston State on Sunday afternoon. Pochop allowed just one run and scattered five hits to go along with her 11 Ks to improve to 4-2 in the circle. Josie Muffley also had a pair of hits and two RBI at the top of the Tulsa lineup, while Sarah Briers, Haley Meinen, Morgan Neal and Jesse Smith all recorded doubles for Tulsa.
Prairie View A&M 5, Wichita State 2; Wichita State 3, Abilene Christian 2
Wichita State split the final day of the Maverick Invitational, falling 5-2 to Prairie View A&M and ending the weekend with a 3-2 win over Abilene Christian in nine innings on Sunday afternoon. Bailee Nickerson hit two home runs on the day and drove in four RBI in the doubleheader, scoring the go-ahead run off a double in extra innings. Caitlin Bingham pitched a career-high nine innings against Abilene Christian, striking out 10 batters to tie her career-high.
James Madison 3, ECU 1
ECU brought the potential winning run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh, but No. 18 JMU hung on for a 3-1 non-conference victory at the ECU Softball Stadium. Tate McClellan and Abigail Umphlett both posted two-hit efforts for ECU and Olivia Narron notched the Pirates' lone RBI. Erin Poepping took the loss in the circle, throwing her sixth complete game of the season while surrendering three runs on 10 hits with six strikeouts.
Florida Gulf Coast 1, UConn 0; Florida Atlantic 3, UConn 2
UConn dropped a pair of games on Sunday, falling 1-0 to Florida Gulf Coast before losing 3-2 against tournament host Florida Atlantic. Briana Marcelino and Ashley Esty tallied UConn’s two hits against Florida Gulf Coast, while Marybeth Olson took the loss after allowing the lone run and five hits in five innings with seven strikeouts.
Against Florida Atlantic, Chloe Kerns and Carli Cutler each drove in a run. Jill Stockley allowed two runs on six hits in 5.1 innings before Katie Koshes was saddled with the loss after allowing the go-ahead run to score in the bottom of the sixth.
