Tulane needed four sets to dispatch of Southern Mississippi to close the nonconference home schedule at Fogelman Arena in New Orleans. The Green Wave defeated the Golden Eagles by a final score of 25-16, 25-18, 24-26, 25-20 on Wednesday night.
Kayla Dinkins paced Tulane with a team-high 12 kills and 10 block assists for a double-double, and Kaylie McHugh added 20 digs for the Green Wave. Lexie Douglas chipped in eight kills, 10 digs and four service aces in the victory, which improved Tulane to 3-2 at home this season.
SMU 3, TCU 0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-18)
SMU won in a Wednesday night Texas showdown against TCU, dropping the Horned Frogs in straight sets by a margin of 25-20, 25-20, 25-18. The Mustangs claimed their fifth match victory in six starts with the win over TCU, including their fourth straight win by way of a four-set sweep.
Rachel Woulfe led all SMU players with 14 kills in the triumph against TCU, while Hannah Jacobs chipped in 12 kills. Lily Heim finished the contest with 38 assists, as SMU as a team assisted on 43 of its 46 total kills in the match.
No. RV Cincinnati 3, Xavier 0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-15)
Cincinnati swept rival Xavier on the court on Thursday night to open the Queen City Classic. The Bearcats raced past the Musketeers 25-17, 25-17, 25-15 at the Cintas Center. Cincinnati held Xavier to a mere .111 attack percentage for the contest, and logged 13 services aces while holding the Musketeers without an ace.
Reigning American Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week Jordan Thompson notched a team-high 22 kills for Cincinnati, hitting at a .372 clip and adding 11 digs for a double-double. Maria Mallon added seven kills and 11 digs, while Armania Heckenmueller contributed 34 assists and seven digs.
UConn 3, Holy Cross 2 (14-25, 25-12, 21-25, 25-21, 15-11)
UConn battled back from a two sets to one deficit to claim the final two frames of a five-set victory over Holy Cross in the opening game of the Dog Pound Challenge in Storrs, Connecticut. The Huskies snapped a three-match skid with the win over Holy Cross, improving to 3-1 at home thus far in 2019.
Caylee Parker powered the UConn offense with a match-high 18 kills, adding nine digs and two blocks to the Huskies cause. Genna Florig chipped in 11 kills and nine for UConn, and Courtney Morris secured a double-double with 41 assists and 11 digs.
Villanova 3, Temple 1 (25-14, 21-25, 25-15, 25-18)
Temple fell for the first time in the 2019 season, dropping a 3-1 decision to host Villanova on the opening night of the Villanova Classic. The Owls wound up on the wrong side of a 14-25, 25-21, 15-25, 18-25 result to snap their nine-match winning streak.
Katerina Papazoglou led the way for Temple with a double-double that featured 11 kills and 12 digs, and Gem Grimshaw and Dana Westfield posted a team-high 12 kills each. Tyler Lindgren recorded a team-high 32 assists in defeat.
No. 15 Creighton 3, Wichita State 0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-19)
Wichita State kicked off its first match on a swing through Nebraska by facing #15 Creighton to open the Creighton Classic. The host Blue Jays swept the Shockers by a 25-15, 25-17, 25-19 final score.
Brylee Kelly posted a team-high seven kills for Wichita State, and Kara Brown led the way with a team-high 11 digs. Nicole Anderson finished the match with four kills and five digs.
