PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of its weekly men’s and women’s tennis honors for the week-ending February 17.
AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE MEN’S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Marius Frosa • Sr. • Wichita State • Galati, Romania
Frosa went 2-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles to lead Wichita State to a pair of wins in three matches last week. An NCAA Championship quarterfinalist in doubles last season, Frosa paired with Murkel Dellien to score wins against DePaul and Iowa, including a 6-4 victory against a Hawkeyes tandem that was ranked No. 10 nationally. He added two straight-set singles wins against DePaul and Iowa, playing at the No. 5 spot and improving his singles record to 8-2 in the dual match season.

The 2020 American Athletic Conference Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships will be held in April at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Tulsa. The women’s championship takes place April 15-18, while the men’s championship will be played April 16-19.
MEN’S TENNIS UPDATE
UCF (4-3) is ranked No. 24 in the Feb. 5 Oracle/ITA ranking. The Knights are idle until a Feb. 29 matchup against Florida Atlantic.
UConn (1-10) dropped a 4-0 decision at Hofstra to start last week’s action, and the Huskies came up just short against Siena, falling 4-3 Sunday. The Huskies look to get on track with a trip to Pennsylvania this weekend. UConn will be at Saint Joseph’s Friday before facing Bucknell Saturday.
East Carolina (7-2) split a pair of matches last week as the Pirates topped Hampton 7-0, but fell 6-1 to Virginia Commonwealth. Wisse Jonker and Federico Masetti are both 7-2 in singles play, while Agustin Tamagnone is 6-1. East Carolina is home for two contests this week as the Pirates host Bryant Friday and Georgia Southern Sunday.
Memphis (1-7) has dropped its last four matches after the Tigers were edged 4-3 by Arkansas in their lone match from last week. Five of the six singles matches against the Razorbacks were decided in three sets, and the doubles point proved to be the difference as the teams split the singles round. The Tigers visit Kentucky Friday.
USF (5-2) was idle last week. The Bulls are back in action with a pair of matches in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex this week. USF visits SMU Friday and takes on TCU Sunday.
SMU (8-4) dropped a pair of matches on its two-day trip to Louisiana as the Mustangs fell 4-0 to LSU and dropped a 6-1 decision to Tulane. SMU returns home for three matches this week. The Mustangs host USF Friday and have a Saturday doubleheader against Pomona-Pitzer and TCU.
Temple (3-2) was idle last week. The Owls return to the courts Saturday against Wagner at the Legacy Tennis Center in Philadelphia.
Tulane (5-4) picked up a 6-1 win against SMU in the Green Wave’s only match from last week. Hamish Stewart is off to an 8-1 start in dual match singles play to lead the Green Wave. Tulane is idle until a March 6 match at No. 4 Texas.
Tulsa (5-3) was idle last week. The Golden Hurricane looks to snap a three-match slide when it faces Arkansas Wednesday.
Wichita State (9-4) went 2-1 on its trip to Iowa last week as the Shockers won matches against Drake (4-1) and DePaul (4-1) in Des Moines and dropped a 4-2 decision to Iowa. Marius Frosa holds an 8-2 mark in singles play in the dual match portion of the season, while Elio Lago takes a 7-3 mark into Friday’s match against UT Arlington.
