UCF's Decamps Repeats As Men's Tennis Player Of The Week

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of its weekly men’s and women’s tennis honors for the week-ending February 3.

Decamps repeats as The American’s Men’s Tennis Player of the Week after he went 2-0 at No. 1 singles and defeated a ranked tandem in his only completed doubles match of last week. He was a straight-set winner (6-4, 6-3) in singles against the nation’s No. 43-ranked player in the Knights’ 5-2 loss to No. 7 Wake Forest and took a three-set win (5-7, 6-4, 6-1) at No. 1 in UCF’s 6-1 victory against Virginia. Decamps joined Juan Pablo Grassi Mazzuchi for a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles against Virginia’s tandem which had a No. 53 national ranking.

The 2020 American Athletic Conference Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships will be held in April at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Tulsa. The women’s championship takes place April 15-18, while the men’s championship will be played April 16-19.
 
 
MEN’S TENNIS UPDATE
UCF (3-3) split a pair of matches last week as the Knights dropped a 5-2 decision to No. 7 Wake Forest - UCF’s fourth straight contest against a nationally ranked opponent - before rebounding for a 6-1 win against Virginia. Gabriel Decamps won his third and fourth consecutive singles matches, including three in a row against nationally ranked players. UCF will visit No. 19 Illinois Sunday.
 
UConn (1-6) had a busy week, with three dual matches, but the Huskies were unable to come away with a win. UConn fell 7-0 to Temple and dropped 6-1 decisions to Villanova and Delaware. The Huskies will visit Fairfield Saturday before hosting Fordham Sunday in Rocky Hill, Connecticut.
 
ECU (4-0) remained unbeaten in 2020 with a pair of dual match victories last week. The Pirates edged Navy for a 4-3 win before taking a 7-0 decision against Winthrop. Javier Renones has mirrored the Pirates start with a 4-0 singles record, while Agustin Tamagone has turned in a 3-0 mark. The Pirates head to the Northeast this week for road matches against St. John’s, Hofstra and NJIT.
 
Memphis (1-4) dropped its only match of the week as the Tigers fell 4-0 to Oklahoma State in a neutral-site contest in Oxford, Mississippi. The Tigers head to Nashville for a Friday match against Vanderbilt and a Saturday contest against Harvard.
 
USF (4-2) fell 7-0 to No. 13 Columbia in what turned out to be the Bulls’ only match of last week. USF’s scheduled contest against No. 23 Mississippi State was postponed due to inclement weather. The Bulls are back in action Saturday when they host Stetson.
 
SMU (7-1) took both ends of a doubleheader last Saturday as the Mustangs topped Oklahoma Baptist 6-1 and edged Portland 4-3 to extend their winning streak to four matches. Tomas Vaise won the clinching match against Portland with a 7-6, 6-7, 6-4 decision. The Mustangs are 7-1 through eight matches for the fifth time in the last 25 seasons. SMU will head to Richmond, Virginia, Friday to face Old Dominion before the Mustangs take on Nebraska Saturday.
 
Temple (2-2) evened its dual match record with a pair of 7-0 wins last week as the Owls topped St. Francis (N.Y.) and UConn. Marin Delmas led the way as the freshman took a 6-1, 6-1 win against the Terriers and a 6-1, 6-3 decision against the Huskies to go with a pair of doubles wins. Temple visits George Washington Sunday.
 
Tulane (3-3) split a pair of closely contested matches last week as the Green Wave scored a 4-3 win against LSU before falling to Virginia Tech by the same score. Akos Kotorman picked up the clinching point against LSU with a three-set win at No. 5 singles to improve his dual match record to 4-0. Tulane heads to Starkville, Mississippi, for a Friday match against No. 23 Mississippi State and a Saturday contest against Texas Tech.
 
Tulsa (5-2) dropped a 6-1 decision to No. 9 Texas A&M in the Golden Hurricane’s only match from last week. The highlight for Tulsa came at the No. 6 singles spot, where Ezequiel Santalla was a 6-1, 7-5 winner against the No. 74-rated player nationally. Tulsa will play the second and third of three straight matches against SEC opponents as the Golden Hurricane visits Alabama Friday and LSU Sunday.
 
Wichita State (5-3) won two of its three matches last week as the Shockers opened the week with 4-3 victories against Charlotte and Georgia State before falling to No. 16 Tennessee by the same score. Elio Lago led the way with a pair of wins in both singles and doubles as he improved his 2020 spring singles record to 5-2. Wichita State has a Tuesday doubleheader against Creighton and Kansas City for its only action of this week.
