Houston No-Hitter, Wichita State Offense Highlights Friday Softball

Houston 9, Valparaiso 0 (Houston Invitational, Houston, Texas)
 
Houston capped a 2-0 day on Friday at its own Houston Invitational at Cougar Softball Stadium with a 9-0 shutout in five innings over Valparaiso. Freshman pitcher Logan Hulon tossed a no-hitter in her first career appearance for the Cougars, becoming the first pitcher in American Athletic Conference history to throw a no-hitter in her collegiate debut.
 
Hulon was just the fourth freshman in American history to spin a no-hitter in her rookie season, joining Maryssa Becker from Louisville (March 19, 2014 against Western Kentucky), Katie Koshes from UConn (combined no-hitter on March 29, 2017 against Bryant) and Georgina Corrick of USF (March 18, 2018 against North Florida). Hulon walked three batters and struck out eight on 85 pitches to keep Valparaiso off the scoreboard.
 
Sarah Queen went 2-for-2 with a double, a home run and three RBI for Houston, while Rock Benavides connected on her first home run for the Cougars and drove in a pair of runs. Aspen Howie added an RBI and scored a team-high two runs.
 
Houston 4, UMass Lowell 3 (Houston Invitational, Houston, Texas)
 
Houston scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and withstood a rally in the top of the seventh from UMass Lowell to open the Houston Invitational with a 4-3 win on Friday afternoon.
 
Lindsey Stewart posted a 3-for-4 day at the plate with a stolen base and two runs scored for Houston, and Abby Odneal chipped in two hits and two RBI. Charese Wyatt notched the other RBI on the day for the Cougars.
 
Rachel Hertenberger went six strong innings allowing three runs on three hits, issuing two walks and notching four strikeouts. Megan Lee spun a hitless top of the seventh inning to earn the save.
 
Wichita State 19, Lamar 2 (5) (Texas Classic, Austin, Texas)
 
Wichita State raced out of the gates with 12 runs over the first two innings, adding seven runs in the final two frames to blast Lamar 19-2 in five innings on Friday at the Texas Classic at McCombs Field. The Shockers run total represented the second-most runs in program history.
 
Lauren Mills led the high-powered Wichita State offense with three hits that included a three-run double and solo home run, four RBI and a pair of runs scored. Sydney McKinney finished the game 2-for-2 with three RBI and two runs, and Kaylee Huecker, Lauren Johnson and Wylie Glover each chipped in two RBI apiece.
 
Caitlin Bingham tossed four shutout innings and allowed four hits, logging three walks and three strikeouts to earn the win on the mound for Wichita State.
 
Wichita State 14, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 4 (5) (Texas Classic, Austin, Texas)
 
Wichita State scored seven runs in the bottom of the first inning in its second Friday game at the Texas Classic in a 14-4 run-rule win against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The Shockers completed the day with 33 runs and 29 hits in only 10 total innings.
 
Neleigh Herring clubbed a first-inning grand slam and scored three runs for the potent Wichita State offense, while Bailey Urban logged two hits including a home run and four RBI. Madison Perrigan contributed a two-run double and a pair of runs scored for the Shockers attack.
 
Erin McDonald claimed her first victory of the season, surrendering five hits and walking three with six strikeouts in a complete game effort.
 
Tulsa 10, Tennessee Tech 2 (5) (Mercer Invitational, Macon, Georgia)
 
Tulsa opened its 2020 season with a 10-2 win in five innings against Tennessee Tech at the Mercer Invitational. The Golden Hurricane plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth frame to earn the run-rule triumph.
 
Aubrey Seaney connected on two base hits, including a two-run walk-off home run, and drove in four runs for Tulsa, as Sarah Briers and Chenise Delce added home runs for the Golden Hurricane. Mikayla Whitten capped the game 2-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored.
 
Kassidy Scott went the distance in the circle to pick up the win, allowing three hits and striking out four Tennessee Tech batters.
 
Tulsa 5, Eastern Kentucky 2 (Mercer Invitational, Macon, Georgia)
 
Tulsa capped an unbeaten Friday at Mercer with a 5-2 result against Eastern Kentucky in its second game of the Mercer Invitational.
 
Chenise Delce homered for the second straight game, driving in two Tulsa runs in the bottom of the third inning. Kyle Norwood added two hits and three runs to the Golden Hurricane cause, while Alexis Perry posted two RBI.
 
Delce won her season debut on the mound with 6.2 innings of five-hit softball, yielding two runs on five hits with six strikeouts. Samantha Pochop recorded the final out to earn the save.
 
UCF 11, Indiana 2 (5) (Black and Gold Tournament, Orlando, Florida)
 
UCF picked up its second run-rule win in as many days against Indiana, dropping the Hoosiers 11-2 in five innings on Friday at the Black and Gold Tournament.
 
Georgia Blair ended the contest in the bottom of the fifth inning with a three-run walk-off home run. Justene Molina added three RBI with a pair of run-scoring singles for UCF, and Blair, Kyra Klarkowski and Karissa Ornelas each scored two runs.
 
Gianna Mancha allowed three hits and walked one batter, striking out six on 77 pitches in a complete game win for the Knights.
 
Memphis 15, Hawaii 3 (Paradise Classic, Honolulu, Hawaii)
 
Memphis secured the top seed entering tournament play at the Paradise Classic by downing host Hawaii 15-3. The Tigers scored seven runs in the top of the seventh inning to put the game away.
 
Delaney Smith enjoyed a 2-for-5 showing that featured a three-run triple and three runs scored for Memphis, as Brady Rowland and Kendall Lee each added two RBI apiece. Alyssa Dean and Sara Ann Davidson both scored two runs.
 
Chyanne Ellett picked up her second relief win of the tournament after throwing 3.2 innings and allowing two runs, striking out three.
 
Northern Colorado 6, Memphis 5 (8) (Paradise Classic, Honolulu, Hawaii)
 
In its opening game of the day at the Paradise Classic, Memphis tied the contest in the bottom of the seventh before losing a heartbreaking 6-5 decision to Northern Colorado in eight innings.
 
Gracie Morton went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI for the Memphis offense, and Meagan Chism turned in two hits and a pair of runs for the Tigers. Mariah Nichols took the hard-luck loss with four innings of three-hit relief, allowing two earned runs.
 
East Carolina 12, Campbell (5) (Kickin’ Chicken Classic, Conway, South Carolina)
 
East Carolina split its first day of play at the Kickin’ Chicken Classic at Coastal Carolina with a 12-0 win in five innings over Campbell on Friday. The Pirates racked up seven runs over the final two innings alone to secure the run-rule victory.
 
Chandley Garner logged three hits and added three RBI for ECU, and Rachel McCollum ripped two base hits and scored three runs. Logyn Estes and Bailey Ledvina each chipped in two hits and a pair of RBI for the Pirates.
 
Erin Poepping threw three innings of two-hit softball to pick up the win, walking one and striking out three Campbell batters.
 
Iowa 6, East Carolina 5 (Kickin’ Chicken Classic, Conway, South Carolina)
 
Iowa stopped a four-run, sixth-inning East Carolina rally with a walk-off single to defeat the Pirates 6-5 to open the Kickin’ Chicken Classic.
 
Rachel McCollum connected on two solo home runs for the ECU offensive cause, and Mason Hedgecock fashioned a 3-for-3 day with a run scored. Oliva Narron drove in a run and crossed the plate once for the Pirates.
 
Erin Poepping was saddled with the loss in 2.2 innings of relief in which she only yielded three hits and an unearned run.
 
UConn 3, Georgetown 0 (FGCU Tournament, Fort Myers, Florida)
 
UConn shut out Georgetown 3-0 in its opening game of 2020 and the FGCU Softball Tournament.
 
Briana Marcelino ripped two hits that included a two-run double and scored a run to guide the UConn offense, and Reese Guevarra also scored a run and drew two walks for the Huskies.
 
Marybeth Olson shined in her first start of the season, blanking Georgetown while allowing only three hits on 89 pitches in six full innings. Olson allowed one walk and struck out 11 Hoyas in the win. Katie Koshes worked a perfect seventh frame with one strikeout to notch a save.
 
LIU 2, UConn 1 (8) (FGCU Tournament, Fort Myers, Florida)
 
After UConn tied the game in the top of the seventh inning with an RBI single, LIU ultimately walked off with a 2-1 win over the Huskies in eight innings in afternoon action at the FGCU Softball Tournament.
 
Kiwi McDaniel registered two hits in the game for UConn, including the game-tying RBI single in the top of the seventh stanza that drove home Aziah James. Marybeth Olson and Reese Guevarra both recorded two base hits for the Huskies.
 
Despite not allowing an earned run over 2.2 innings of relief, Katie Koshes was saddled with the hard-luck loss.
 
No. RV Fresno State 3, No. RV USF 2 (USF-Rawlings Invitational, Tampa, Florida)
 
A two-run fifth inning ultimately proved to be the difference for No. RV Fresno State in a 3-2 decision against No. RV USF at the USF-Rawlings Invitational at the USF Softball Stadium.
 
Bethaney Keen drilled a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning as part of her two hits on the day, and AnaMarie Bruni reached base three times and scored a run for the Bulls. Vivian Ponn was charged with one earned run in the top of the fifth to take the loss for USF.
