UCF 8, Clemson 0 (5) (Black and Gold Tournament, Orlando, Florida)
UCF remained unbeaten at the Black and Gold Tournament with an 8-0 run-rule win over Clemson. It was the first meeting between the Knights and Tigers on the softball diamond, as Clemson made its official NCAA varsity debut during the tournament.
Karissa Ornelas went 2-for-2 with three RBI and a run scored for UCF, and Justene Molina chipped in a pair of singles and drove in three runs. Georgia Blair turned in two hits and an RBI, and Juliana Wilson scored twice for the Knights.
Breanna Vasquez shined in her first start of the season, allowing a single hit in five innings with no walks and eight strikeouts.
UCF 5, Duke 2 (Black and Gold Tournament, Orlando, Florida)
UCF moved to 4-0 on opening weekend with a second straight win over an ACC opponent, downing Duke 5-2 on Saturday.
Justene Molina drove in two runs with an RBI triple in the bottom of the fifth inning, as Georgia Blair and Jazmine Esparza also added an RBI in the UCF victory. Denali Schappacher and Karissa Ornelas finished the contest with two hits.
Alea White yielded five hits in a complete game for UCF, walking two and striking out six on 92 pitches to move to 2-0 in 2020.
No. RV Tulsa 5, Mercer 1 (Mercer Invitational, Macon, Georgia)
No. RV Tulsa moved to 3-0 on the season, scoring three runs in the top of the seventh to power the Golden Hurricane to a 5-1 win over host Mercer on Saturday night at the Mercer Invitational.
Alexis Perry drilled a three-run home run in the seventh frame to provide cushion to the Tulsa lead. Chenise Delce connected on her third home run of the weekend, a solo shot in the first inning, and Aubree Seaney added two hits for the Golden Hurricane.
Delce allowed an earned run on five hits in five innings, striking out five for her second win of the weekend. Kassidy Scott threw two scoreless innings with five strikeouts of her own to claim the save.
No. RV Houston 6, Fordham 1 (Houston Invitational, Houston, Texas)
No. RV Houston scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth on its way to a 6-1 win against Fordham at the Cougar Softball Stadium.
Sarah Queen went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI for the Houston offense, and Abby Odneal connected on a two-run triple. Bethany Busch scored a pair of runs for the Cougars, and Aspen Howie added a solo home run.
Megan Lee spun a complete game three-hitter, walking one and striking out three Fordham batters to earn the win.
UMass Lowell 7, No. RV Houston 4 (8) (Houston Invitational, Houston, Texas)
After No. RV Houston scored the tying run in the bottom of the seventh inning, UMass Lowell countered with three runs in the eighth inning to defeat the Cougars 7-4.
Sarah Queen shined with a 3-for-4 showing that included an RBI and a stolen base, and Kelli Montgomery chipped in two hits and a run driven in.
Despite five strikeouts and no earned runs allowed, Logan Hulon was saddled with the loss after three unearned runs came across in the top of the eighth inning.
Memphis 8, Northern Colorado 3 (Paradise Classic, Honolulu, Hawaii)
Memphis reached the championship game of the Hawaii Paradise Classic with an 8-3 Saturday win over Northern Colorado.
Sara Ann Davidson went a perfect 3-for-3 with a two-run double for the Tigers, and Kendall Lee, Delaney Smith, Gracie Morton and Brady Rowland each added two hits in the victory. Lee and Baylee Smith each scored a pair of runs for Memphis.
Karli Perque allowed one run in four innings, adding one strikeout to pick up the win.
Iowa State 4, Memphis 2 (Paradise Classic, Honolulu, Hawaii)
Iowa State erased an early 2-0 deficit to down Memphis 4-2 and claim the Paradise Classic championship on Saturday night.
Brady Rowland singled in two runs in the bottom of the first inning to give Memphis a 2-0 advantage, but the Tigers managed only one additional hit from Sam Ibison for the remainder of the game. Delaney Smith and Baylee Smith both added stolen bases to the box score.
Chyanne Ellett took the loss after allowing four earned runs in two full innings of work. Mariah Nichols worked five innings of one-hit softball to keep Memphis within striking distance.
UConn 3, Boston College 2 (8) (FGCU Softball Tournament, Fort Myers, Florida)
A walk-off two-run single by Kiwi McDaniel in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted UConn to a 3-2 win over Boston College at the FGCU Softball Complex.
McDaniel connected on the winning hit with one out in extras to score Aziah James and Brianna Marcelino. James led all players in the game with three hits along with scoring the tying run in the eighth.
Meghan O’Neil went the distance in the circle, allowing three hits in eight full innings of work while striking out five on 74 pitches.
Delaware 9, UConn 6 (FGCU Softball Tournament, Fort Myers, Florida)
UConn dropped its first game of the day on Saturday against Delaware, scoring the final six runs before the rally fell short at 9-6 against the Blue Hens.
Samantha Barnett drove in a pair of runs for the Huskies, as six different UConn players came across to score during the game.
Katie Koshes yielded two earned runs in two innings to take the loss. Marybeth Olson blanked Delaware in the final three innings, allowing two hits and striking out six in relief.
No. 6 Texas 9, Wichita State 1 (Texas Classic, Austin, Texas)
In a rematch with No. 6 Texas, Wichita State fell for just the second time on opening by way of a 9-1 defeat in five innings on Saturday.
Ryleigh Buck drove in the lone Wichita State run on the day, singling home Wylie Glover in the fifth inning. Five different Shockers contributed a hit during the game.
Bailey Lange allowed eight earned runs in 4.1 innings to take the loss.
No. 17 Michigan 2, No. RV USF 1 (8) (USF-Rawlings Invitational, Tampa, Florida)
No. RV USF dropped a heartbreaking 2-1 decision in eight innings against No. 17 Michigan at the USF Softball Stadium. It was the second straight one-run defeat against a team either ranked or receiving votes in the national polls for the Bulls.
Madison Epperson drove home Megan Pierro with an RBI single to tie the game at 1-1. AnaMarie Bruni and Brooke Leistl managed the other hits for USF in the game.
Georgina Corrick allowed only one earned run in eight innings of work, scattering seven hits and walking three while striking out nine on 112 pitches.
Coastal Carolina 8, East Carolina 1 (Kickin’ Chicken Classic, Conway, South Carolina)
East Carolina dropped an 8-1 result against host Coastal Carolina in its first game of the day Saturday at the Kickin’ Chicken Classic.
Five different Pirates registered a hit during the game, as Olivia Narron scored the lone ECU run on a Coastal Carolina throwing error while attempting a double-steal with Rachel McCollum.
Kama Woodall allowed five earned runs in 2.1 innings to take the loss.
No. RV Virginia Tech 4, East Carolina 2 (Kickin’ Chicken Classic, Conway, South Carolina)
ECU battled No. RV Virginia Tech neck and neck before a three-run sixth inning for the Hokies powered a 4-2 win for Virginia Tech at Coastal Carolina.
Chandley Garner clubbed a solo home run for ECU in the sixth inning, and Bailey Ledvina came around to score on a seventh-inning throwing error.
Erin Poepping went the distance in defeat, allowing nine hits and three earned runs with no walks and eight strikeouts in a complete game.
