For the Bulls, it was the first conference loss of the season as they dropped to 8-3-2 overall, 3-1-1 in the American Athletic Conference. SMU improved to 8-2-1 overall, 2-1-1 in The American.

Whitmore put the Mustangs in front just 3:05 into the game. The transfer had a South Florida clearance ricochet off her over the head of the Bulls' goalkeeper and into the net.

"I think the early goal gave us some confidence and gave us something more to play for," SMU head coach Chris Petrucelli explained after the win. "We felt like we had something and didn't want to give it away."

In the 63rd minute, Whitmore again took advantage of a mistake by the Bulls defense for her second goal of the contest. USF goalkeeper Sydney Martinez mishandled the ball, and Whitmore took it away for an empty-net goal.

With the two goals, Whitmore now has four on the season, tied with Courtney Sebazco for the team lead.

The Mustangs were under heavy offensive pressure from the Bulls throughout the contest, but Tatum Sutherland was up to the challenge, making eight saves on 14 shots by USF.

In the second 45 minutes, the Cougars began to gain control of the game, outshooting East Carolina 11-2. The Pirates stayed in the game thanks to the play of the defense and goalkeeper Maeve English. On the other end, the best ECU chance came when a ball over the top found Kylie Alvarez charging into the Houston box, but she pulled her attempt just wide of the goalpost.

The first overtime continued the momentum from the second half as Houston tried to grab the game-winning goal. English was called on for another save while one Cougar shot went over the crossbar.

In the second overtime, the Pirates finally got a good look at the Cougar goal and they took advantage of it. In the 103rd minute, Holly Schlagel found space on the right wing and swung a cross into the Houston box. Annabelle Abbott jumped up to win it and her header reached Haley McWhirter at the edge of the six-yard box. McWhirter let loose a spinning shot that clipped the bottom of the crossbar and bounced into the goal.
