TAMPA, Florida – Memphis claimed its second American Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Championship after winning a penalty shootout with South Florida, 3-0, Sunday, Nov. 7 at Corbett Soccer Stadium in Tampa, Fla.
The two teams were held scoreless after 110 minutes behind outstanding goalkeeping performances by Memphis’ Elizabeth Moberg (seven saves) and South Florida’s Sydney Martinez (six saves).
Moberg, the tournament’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player, made two saves in the penalty shootout, while Tanya Boychuk and Saorla Miller converted to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead. After South Florida’s third attempt went high, Jocelyn Alonzo scored to clinch the title for Memphis.
In regulation, Moberg stopped South Florida’s best chance with back-to-back saves in the 66
th minute, while Memphis had a great chance in the second minute of the second half that Martinez made a diving save.
Memphis (13-4-2) led in shots, 15-14, while each time each had five corner kicks.
Miller was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Offensive Player after converting one of the penalties and scoring the game-winning goal in the semifinal against Houston.
This was the third time in four seasons that Memphis and South Florida (12-3-3) played in the championship final. Memphis won in Tampa in 2018, while the Bulls were victorious in Memphis in 2019.
With the win, Memphis earns The American’s automatic bid to the 2021 NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Championship. The selection show is set for 4:30 p.m. Eastern on Monday, Nov. 8 and will air on NCAA.com.
