IRVING, Texas – The American Athletic Conference has announced the 2020 women’s soccer awards, voted on by the league’s head coaches.
Regular-season champion USF claimed four year-end awards, as Sydny Nasello was named Offensive Player of the Year, Chyanne Dennis was selected as one of the Defensive Player of the Year honorees, Sydney Martinez was picked Goalkeeper of the Year and the Bulls’ coaches were named the Coaching Staff of the Year.
Memphis earned two awards, as Mya Jones was selected as the Midfielder of the Year and Grace Stordy was picked as Rookie of the Year. Cincinnati’s Ashley Barron was honored as one of the Defensive Player of the Year winners.
Barron and Jones repeated as first-team all-conference honorees and Jones was the lone unanimous first-team selection.
Nasello has tallied four goals and five assists for 13 points in nine matches this season for the Bulls. Her four goals are tied for second in the league and her five assists lead the conference. It is third consecutive year a Bull has earned the honor.
Dennis has aided USF to a 0.42 goals against average for the season, including five shutouts. Barron has led Cincinnati to a pair of shutouts and a 1.08 GAA. It is both Cincinnati and USF’s second Defensive Player of the Year honor.
Jones, the 2019 Rookie of the Year, is for second in the league with four assists and is third in the conference with 2.80 shots per game. It Memphis’ first Midfielder of the Year award since 2014.
Martinez, USF’s first Goalkeeper of the Year honoree, has posted a league-best save percentage of 85.7 percent and allowed four goals with five shutouts.
Stordy has played on the Tiger backline that has a 0.79 goals against average and has also added three goals and an assist for seven points. Story is Memphis’ third Rookie of the Year.
USF head coach Denise Schilte-Brown and her staff have guided USF to 7-0-2 undefeated record so far in the 2020 season and it is the second time the staff has been honored in three seasons.
UCF earned the Team Fair Play Award after totaling 73 points (53 fouls, four yellow cards, zero red cards) during conference play. The Fair Play Award is given to the team with the fewest accumulated fouls, yellow cards and red cards in league action (foul = one point, yellow card = five points, red card = 10 points).
