Memphis opened the new season a perfect 2-0, sweeping California Baptist and Chattanooga on opening day. The Tigers defeated California Baptist by 25-19, 25-23, 25-19 scores, and triumphed over Chattanooga 25-23, 27-25-25-14.
Elizabeth Orf hit .625 and turned in a team-high 10 kills in the sweep of California Baptist, and Sabrina Bianco notched a double-double with 38 assists and 10 digs. Miya Smith added 10 kills and three block assists in the win. Orf was just as impressive against Chattanooga, hitting at a .682 clip with 16 kills. Bianco registered 46 helpers and 12 digs in the nightcap.
Tulane 3, Northwestern St 2 (23-25, 20-25, 25-11, 25-11, 18-16)/Tulane 3, Alabama A&M 0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-15)
Tulane picked up two home victories to break in the new season, bouncing back from two sets down to defeat Northwestern State in five before sweeping Alabama A&M in straight sets. The Green Wave trailed 23-25, 20-25 against Northwestern State before ripping off 25-11, 25-11, 18-16 set triumphs. It was a dominant Tulane performance in match two by way of 25-13, 25-17, 25-15 scores.
Yvette Burcescu narrowly missed a double-double with 10 kills and nine total blocks against Northwestern State, hitting an even .400 for Tulane. Mackenzie Martin and Michelle Urquhart each led the way with nine kills in the sweep of Alabama A&M.
Wichita State 3, Missouri State 0 (25-22, 26-24, 25-16)/Wichita State 3, UT Martin 0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-22)
Wichita State made quick work of the opposition on a neutral floor at Arkansas State, sweeping Missouri State and UT Martin on Friday In straight sets. The Shockers emerged 25-22, 26-24, 25-16 from match one and rolled 25-16, 25-15, 25-22 against UT Martin.
Brylee Kelly’s 16 kills led the way for Wichita State in the season opener with Missouri State, and Lauren Phillips added 34 assists and six digs. Kelly hit an even .400 with 12 kills and seven digs to pace the Shockers against UT Martin, while Phillips just missed a double-double with 35 assists and nine digs.
SMU 3, Pacific 0 (25-12, 25-14, 25-21)/SMU 3, Stephen F. Austin 0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-22)
SMU held sway on home court to open the new season, sweeping past both Pacific and Stephen F. Austin on Friday. The Mustangs downed Pacific 25-12, 25-14, 25-21 in straight sets before dropping Stephen F. Austin 25-17, 25-15, 25-22.
Hannah Jacobs was red-hot in the Pacific match, hitting .611 with a team-high 13 kills. Jadyn Bauss contributed 11 kills and five digs for SMU in the win. Rachel Woulfe hit an even .500 against Stephen F. Austin with 12 kills to pace the Mustangs, and Jacobs chipped in 11 kills on a .400 hitting percentage.
Houston 3, Lipscomb 2 (23-25, 22-25, 25-22, 25-23, 15-5)
With its usual flair for the dramatic, Houston battled back from a two-set deficit to stun Lipscomb in its season debut on a neutral floor at Oklahoma. The Cougars notched a 23-25, 22-25, 25-22, 25-23, 15-5 five-set thriller.
Abbie Jackson shined for Houston with a .471 hitting percentage, collecting a team-high 19 kills and three service aces. Annie Cooke tied Jackson with three aces to go along with 51 assists and five digs. Kortlyn Henderson chipped in 10 kills in the victory for the Cougars.
No. RV Dayton 3, Cincinnati 2 (25-23, 25-23, 22-25, 24-26, 15-7)/Cincinnati 3, Texas State 1 (25-20, 26-28, 26-24, 25-20)
Opening the season on the road at Dayton, Cincinnati responded from a hard-luck five-set loss to the Flyers by taking down Texas State in the nightcap. The Bearcats narrowly missed the comeback in match one by a 23-25, 23-25, 25-22, 26-24, 7-15 final score before defeating Texas State by a 25-20, 26-28, 26-24, 25-20 set tally.
Adria Oliver powered Cincinnati with a .545 hitting percentage and 13 kills against Dayton, to go along with three block assists. Armania Heckenmueller contributed 44 assists and 16 digs in the defeat. Abby Walker led the way for the Bearcats against Texas State with 17 kills and a .455 hitting percentage, and Heckenmueller dropped 59 assists and 15 digs.
Temple 3, Rider 2 (25-22, 25-18, 21-25, 20-25, 15-1)/Delaware 3, Temple 1 (25-8, 21-25, 25-22, 25-15)
Temple split a pair of home contests at McGonigle Arena on Friday, outlasting Rider in five frames before losing in four sets to Delaware. The Owls outpointed Rider 25-22, 25-18, 21-25, 20-25, 15-1 before dropping an 8-25, 25-21, 22-25, 15-25 decision to Delaware.
Miray Bolukbasi registered 19 kills and five digs for Temple in the Rider win, hitting .289 in the victory. Gem Grimshaw filled the stat sheet with 18 kills, 16 digs and six total blocks in the triumph. Katerina Papazoglou tallied eight kills and seven digs and Falanika Danielson logged 22 digs against Delaware.
No. 24 Georgia Tech 3, UCF 1 (17-25, 26-24, 25-15, 25-23)
UCF was unable to sustain the momentum of an impressive first set against No. 24 Georgia Tech, ultimately dropping a 3-1 decision at The Venue in Orlando. Georgia Tech bounced back from a 17-25 first set against the Knights to win three straight frames at 26-24, 25-15, 25-23.
McKenna Melville led UCF with 19 kills, six digs and six total blocks in the defeat, and Tali Marmen chipped in 13 kills and eight digs. Annie-Marie Watson finished the match with eight kills and seven block assists.
Rutgers 3, South Florida 0 (25-23, 25-16, 25-14)
South Florida dropped a competitive three-set decision on a neutral floor to Rutgers, falling 25-23, 25-16, 25-14 against the Scarlet Knights.
Marta Cvitkovic contributed eight kills, six digs and two service aces in the setback for the Bulls. CC Clausen added 13 digs for USF.
