East Carolina found its first victories of the season on Friday in tournament play at Coastal Carolina. The Pirates swept Radford 25-18, 33-31, 25-17 and took down UNC Wilmington 25-23, 25-19, 25-15.
Sydney Kleinman shined with a double-double against Radford, notching a match-high 24 kills on .373 hitting with 12 digs. Kenzie Beckham chipped in 37 assists and eight digs, and Tia Shum recorded a team-high 20 digs. Kleinman connected on 12 kills with seven digs later in the day against UNCW.
South Florida 3, LIU 1 (19-25, 25-21, 25-16, 27-25)/South Florida 3, Furman 0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-20)
South Florida was victorious in its first two matches of the Jacksonville Dolphin Classic, dropping LIU 19-25, 25-21, 25-16, 27-25 in four sets and sweeping Furman 25-16, 25-18, 25-20.
CC Clausen led the way for USF with 21 digs against LIU, with Marta Cvitkovic adding 18 kills and eight digs. Clausen’s 12 digs in the win over Furman again led the Bulls.
Tulane 3, ULM 0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-17)/Tulane 3, Saint Louis 1 (17-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-18)
Tulane swept its opening matches at the Mary Jo Wynn Invitational at Missouri State, blanking ULM in three sets (25-18, 25-20, 25-17) and taking down Saint Louis in four frames (17-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-18).
Kayla Dinkins hit a blazing .526 with 10 kills and three total blocks in the ULM match, and Lexie Douglas filled the stat sheet with nine kills and 12 digs in the win. Michelle Urquhart hit a team-high .440 with 12 kills and 12 digs to pace the Green Wave against Saint Louis.
UCF 3, FGCU 1 (25-18, 25-18, 15-25, 25-15)/UCF 3, Florida State 2 (25-20, 21-25, 24-26, 25-18, 15-13)
UCF defeated FGCU in four sets (25-18, 25-18, 15-25, 25-15) before outlasting Florida State in five frames (25-20, 21-25, 24-26, 25-18, 15-13).
McKenna Melville hit .353 with 16 kills and nine digs in the FGCU match, and Anne-Marie Watson hit at a .550 clip with 11 kills and five blocks. Melville had 27 kills and 28 digs in five sets in the FSU match.
Wichita State 3, Kent State 1 (25-15, 25-20, 23-25, 25-14)/Kansas 3, Wichita State 0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-16)
Wichita State split a pair of matches at Kansas, dropping Kent State in four sets (25-15, 25-20, 23-25, 25-14) before falling in straight sets to the host Jayhawks (22-25, 20-25, 16-25).
Sophia Rohling finished with 18 kills on .342 hitting with six digs against Kent State, and Lily Liekweg added a team-high 20 digs. Kailin Newsome led the Shockers with 11 kills against Kansas.
Coastal Carolina 3, East Carolina 0 (15-25, 23-25, 20-25)
Coastal Carolina opened the weekend slate with a three-set sweep of East Carolina on Thursday night. Coastal downed the Pirates by set scores of 25-15, 25-23, 25-20.
Natalie Tyson hit .457 with 17 kills and six digs in the setback for ECU. Kenzie Beckham added 29 assists and seven digs for the Pirates.
Texas A&M 3, Houston 1 (27-25, 25-21, 20-25, 25-20)
Houston fell out of the top spot in The American standings, losing at Texas A&M in four sets. The Aggies won by way of a 27-25, 25-21, 20-25, 25-20 final score.
Abbie Jackson went for a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs but hit just .133 for Houston in the loss. Kate Georgiades and Torie Frederick each finished with 12 digs each for the Cougars.
SEMO 3, Memphis 2 (25-21, 25-20, 23-25, 24-26, 15-13)
Memphis fell from the ranks of the unbeaten after dropping a heartbreaker to SEMO in five sets. The Tigers lost 21-25, 20-25, 25-23, 26-24, 13-15 in a hard fought battle.
Sabrina Bianco narrowly missed a double-double with 48 assists and nine digs for Memphis. Miya Smith and Autumn Hamilton each finished with 13 kills.
No. 19 Creighton 3, SMU 0 (25-13, 25-12, 25-22)/Illinois 3, SMU 0 (25-14, 25-13, 25-18)
SMU dopped a pair of matches in tournament play at No. 19 Creighton, losing in straight sets to the Blue Jays (13-25, 12-25, 22-25) and Illinois (14-25, 13-25, 18-25).
Lily Heim finished the Creighton match with 20 assists and six digs for SMU. Makayla Miller added a team-high 10 digs. Heim had a matching 20 assists to go with five digs against Illinois, and Miller again had 10 digs.
Norfolk State 3, Temple 1 (21-25, 25-22, 25-23, 25-19)
Temple was unable to build off its first set momentum in match one of the Towson Tiger Invitational, falling in four sets to Norfolk State 25-21, 22-25, 23-25, 19-25.
Gem Grimshaw delivered a team-high 18 kills and chipped in eight digs for Temple. Falanika Danielson racked up a club-high 18 digs in the setback.
Stephen F. Austin 3, Tulsa 1 (25-17, 26-28, 25-20, 25-14)/Arkansas 3, Tulsa 1 (25-17, 17-25, 25-20, 25-21)
Tulsa was swept in a pair of home matches on Friday, falling in four sets to Stephen F. Austin (17-25, 28-26, 20-25, 14-25) and Arkansas (17-25, 25-17, 20-25, 21-25).
Kayley Cassaday powered Tulsa with 17 kills and 13 digs against Stephen F. Austin, and Avery Kalsu finished with 22 assists and 13 digs. Cassaday hit .297 with 13 kills to close the night against Arkansas.
