Defending American champion No. 25 Wichita State opened the 2022 season with a pair of wins at the Sam Houston Bearkat Classic, defeating Dayton 13-5 in six innings and host Sam Houston 9-5.
Sydney McKinney went a combined 5-for-8 with three RBI, a stolen base and four runs scored to open the tournament. Addison Barnard added five RBI, including two home runs, and five stolen bases for the Shockers. Bailey Urban contributed five hits and four RBI in the Wichita State sweep.
South Florida (RV) 10, Kansas City 4
South Florida flew out of the gate with seven runs over the first two innings on the way to a 10-4 win against Kansas City on day two of the USF-Rawlings Invitational. The Bulls outhit the Roos by a 12-2 margin in the victory.
Megan Pierro went a perfect 3-for-3 with a home run and four RBI for South Florida, and Alanah Rivera drove in two runs for the Bulls. Alexis Johns and Meghan Sheehan each scored two runs in the win.
Erin Poepping (1-0) earned her first win at South Florida after spinning 3.2 innings of no-hit relief with five strikeouts against Kansas City. Georgina Corrick threw a scoreless seventh inning with two strikeouts for the Bulls.
Houston 13, UTSA 1 (5)
Houston enjoyed a dominant showing to kick off the Houston Invitational, with the Cougars racing past UTSA 13-1 in five innings. Houston scored its 13 runs on 11 hits, stranding just three runners in four innings on offense.
Becca Schulte clubbed two home runs and drove in four runs for Houston in three at-bats, with Aspen Howie adding three RBI and Bethany Busch two runs batted in. Busch also scored in all three of her plate appearances and added a stolen base.
Kenna Wilkey (1-0) spun four innings of one-hit ball to earn her first win since transferring to Houston, walking two UTSA batters and striking out seven.
Memphis 4, Long Beach State 3/No. 8/9 Arkansas 4, Memphis 3 (8)
Memphis nearly pulled off an upset sweep on day two of the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge in Mexico, taking down Long Beach State 4-3 before losing a heartbreaking 4-3 decision in eight innings to No. 8/9 Arkansas.
Camryn Wineinger ripped three hits and drove in two runs for Memphis in the Long Beach State victory. Kailey Hilderbrand earned the save with the final two outs after Hallie Siems (1-0) scattered seven hits in 6.1 innings with five walks and four strikeouts.
Memphis led Arkansas 3-0 heading to the bottom of the seventh inning before Arkansas rallied with four runs in the final 1.1 innings. Kendall Lee posted two RBI for the Tigers and Alyssa Dean had two hits and two runs scored in the defeat.
Purdue 9, East Carolina 3/East Carolina 6, Georgetown 5 (8)
East Carolina split a pair of games to open the 2022 season at the Kickin’ Chicken Classic, falling to Purdue 9-3 before downing Georgetown 6-5 in eight innings for head coach Shane Winkler’s first win at the helm of the Pirates.
ECU tied Georgetown at 4-4 in the top of the seventh with a sacrifice fly from Taudrea Sinnie and then took the lead in the top of the eighth inning on a Bailey Ledvina RBI single. Ledvina finished the game a perfect 4-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. Sydney Yoder and Logyn Estes each scored two runs in the win for the Pirates.
Addy Bullis (1-0) earned the win in the circle for ECU with one run allowed over three full innings, walking one and striking out three batters for the Pirates.
Minnesota (RV) 3, UCF (RV) 1
Riding high from big walk off win on opening night of the CFX Classic, UCF wound up on the wrong end of a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Minnesota. The Knights held the Gophers in check with 10 Minnesota runners stranded in the contest, but only managed four hits themselves in the loss.
Maddie Bejarano drove in the lone UCF run on the night with a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth inning to trim the Minnesota lead to 2-1. The Knights brought the tying run to the plate three times in the bottom of the seventh but were unable to push a run across.
Grace Jewell (0-1) took a hard-luck loss after allowing an earned run in 3.1 innings pitched as the UCF starter.
North Texas 6, Tulsa 3
Tulsa saw a sixth-inning lead undone by a late North Texas rally in a 6-3 loss at McNeese State’s season opening tournament. The Mean Green erased a 3-1 Golden Hurricane advantage in the top of the sixth frame with five runs to take the win.
Imani Edwards and Abby Jones each tallied two hits in the game for Tulsa, with Edwards also scoring a run. Samantha Pochop (0-1) struck out 10 North Texas batters in five full innings, scattering five hits with three earned runs allowed.
