South Florida looked right at home in the Sunshine State in its first game of the St. Pete/Clearwater Elite Invitational, rolling up 11 hits in a 7-0 rout of Notre Dame in Clearwater, Florida. The Bulls scored three runs in the first inning, one apiece in the second and third and two in the fourth to break the game open.
Megan Pierro finished the day 3-for-4 with two RBI to power the South Florida offense, while Josie Foreman went a perfect 3-for-3 with an RBI. Vivian Ponn and Alanah Rivera each scored twice in the victory for the Bulls.
Georgina Corrick (3-0) spun a two-hit gem for South Florida in the circle, walking one and striking out nine Notre Dame batters on 106 pitches (82 strikes). Corrick extended her American record with her 35th career shutout in the win.
No. 25/RV Wichita State 8, Illinois 3; Longwood 4, No. 25/RV Wichita State 2
No. 25 Wichita State split a pair of games to open tournament play at Arkansas, downing Illinois 8-3 before dropping a heartbreaking 4-2 decision to Longwood in the nightcap.
Addison Barnard, Bailey Urban and Jessica Garcia each logged a pair of RBI for Wichita State in the Illinois win. Sydney McKinney added two hits and scored a run against the Illini. A two-run home run for McKinney in the top of the fifth inning provided Wichita State with its only scoring against Longwood.
Memphis 5, Austin Peay (RV) 4/Belmont 8, Memphis 4
Memphis logged a 1-1 day in tournament action at Florida Gulf Coast, earning a 5-4 win over Austin Peay and losing an 8-4 result against Belmont.
Memphis completed a two-run rally in the bottom of the sixth against Austin Peay, tying the game on an Alexis Dale RBI single before taking the lead for good on a Camryn Wineinger RBI base knock. Dale finished the game with three runs driven in.
No. 19/16 Michigan 6, No. 24 UCF 0/No. 24 UCF 7, Texas Tech 3 (8)
No. 24 UCF fell to a second Big Ten team to open the St. Pete/Clearwater Elite Invitational, falling by a 6-0 score to No. 19/16 Michigan. The Knights bounced back in the evening with a 7-3 win in eight innings against Texas Tech.
UCF was blanked in the hit column until the sixth inning and ultimately stranded five runners on base against Michigan.
The Knights trailed Texas Tech 3-2 after five innings but tied the game on a Shannon Doherty RBI single in the top of the sixth. UCF picked up four runs in the top half of the seventh inning, including two RBI on a Savannah Adams double, to claim the win.
East Carolina 4, Colgate 2/Rutgers 4, East Carolina 3
East Carolina kicked off its home weekend with a 4-2 triumph against Colgate. The Pirates lost a narrow 4-3 decision to Rutgers in their second game of the day.
Sydney Yoder and Keira Womack each logged two RBI for the Pirates in the Colgate win. Bailey Ledvina and Sophie Wools turned in two hits in the ECU victory. Against Rutgers, Ledvina tied the game at 3-3 with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Scarlet Knights vaulted back in front with a solo homer of their own in the top of the seventh to take the victory.
No. 1 Oklahoma 8, Houston 0 (5)/McNeese State 8, Houston 3
Houston closed on the wrong end of two decisions to open its home Houston Classic, as the Cougars were shut out by No. 1 Oklahoma 8-0 and fell to McNeese State 8-3 in the day’s finale.
Houston was one-hit in the contest against the top-ranked Sooners. LA Matthews logged two hits and an RBI for the Cougars in the nightcap against McNeese.
