Feb. 20 Softball Recap
No. RV/25 Auburn 5, South Florida (RV) 1; South Florida (RV) 2, Wisconsin 1
South Florida capped a successful weekend at the St. Pete/Clearwater Elite Invitational with a Sunday split, falling to No. 25 Auburn 5-1 before bouncing back with a 2-1 comeback win against Wisconsin.
Wisconsin held a 1-0 lead against the Bulls until the top of the sixth inning, when Meghan Sheehan drove home Alexis Johns with a two-out RBI single to tie the game at 1-1. Vivian Ponn delivered the winning hit with an RBI base knock up the middle to score Alanah Rivera in the top of the seventh.
Georgina Corrick (5-0) rolled in a complete game five-hitter, allowing one unearned run and one walk while striking out a season-high 13 batters. Corrick finished the tournament 3-0 with a 0.33 ERA, three walks and 28 strikeouts for South Florida.
East Carolina 6, Wagner 2
East Carolina closed its home Pirate Clash with a 6-2 win against Wagner, compiling a 3-2 record during the tournament.
Faith Jarvis, Bailee Wilson and Bailey Ledvina each scored two runs in the win for ECU. Jarvis and Ledvina both added stolen bases to the cause for the Pirates against Wagner.
Tulsa 4, Sam Houston State 0/Louisiana Tech 3, Tulsa 2
Tulsa split its final two games at the La. Tech Invitational, blanking Sam Houston 4-0 before losing to host Louisiana Tech 3-2.
Haley Morgan reached base three times, going 2-for-2 with a run scored for Tulsa against Sam Houston. Makayla Jackson drove in two runs for the Golden Hurricane to aid the winning cause. Kylie Norwood reached safely in four plate appearances with two hits and a run scored in the Louisiana Tech game.
Samantha Pochop was dominant for the Golden Hurricane in the win over Sam Houston, allowing one hit while striking out nine batters in a shutout victory. Pochop took the loss against Louisiana Tech after allowing a walk-off solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
No. 5/6 Florida State 8, No. 24 UCF 0 (5)
Fresh off a wild 15-10 upset against No. 11/9 Texas on Saturday night, No. 24 UCF was unable to continue the momentum in an 8-0 setback against No. 5/6 Florida State to close the schedule for the Knights at the St. Pete/Clearwater Elite Invitational.
UCF saw just one base runner reach in the game by way of a walk. Kama Woodall (2-1) yielded three earned run over 3.1 innings against Florida State, striking out four.
Texas State 8, Houston 2
Houston lost the final game of its own Houston Classic by way of an 8-2 score against Texas State. The Cougars did manage five hits in the defeat but stranded seven runners on base.
LA Matthews and Bethany Busch each logged two hits and an RBI on the day for Houston. Ja’Naiya Thomas and Becca Schulte each scored runs for the Cougars.
FGCU 3, Memphis 2
Memphis lost a heartbreaker in its final game at FGCU, losing grip of a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning before falling to the host school 3-2.
The Tigers led following an RBI double from Taylor Smrt in the first inning and an RBI single for E’Mya Munford in the sixth frame. FGCU tied the contest with a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth and a walk-off single in the home half of the seventh inning.
