Feb. 27 Softball Recap
No. 25 South Florida 2, St. John’s 0
No. 25 South Florida capped a 4-1 weekend at its own home tournament with a fourth shutout victory, blanking St. John’s 2-0. The Bulls outhit the Red Storm 6-2 on the day and 14-5 over consecutive shutout wins.
South Florida pulled ahead in the top of the fifth inning on an Alexis Johns RBI single, with a throwing error allowing a second run to cross that gave the Bulls a 2-0 lead. St. John’s never managed to get a runner beyond first base.
Georgina Corrick (8-0) continued her undefeated start to the season with a two-hit shutout, striking out seven batters on just 82 pitches. Corrick closed the USF Tournament with a 3-0 record in four appearances, allowing no runs on just six hits in 21 innings with 29 strikeouts.
Houston 4, Corpus Christi 1/Houston Baptist 7, Houston 0
Houston leveled its record at its home tournament by opening Sunday with a 4-1 win against Corpus Christi. The Cougars ripped eight hits in the game and scored all four of their runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Amanda Carden, Bethany Busch and Rock Benavides each ripped two hits in the Houston triumph over Corpus Christi, and Kati Ray Brown joined the trio in each scoring one run for the Cougars.
Hannah Todd (1-1) picked up the win against the Islanders with three innings of two-hit relief, allowing an unearned run with two strikeouts.
Tulsa 9, Texas State 5/No. 23 Texas 14, Tulsa 1 (5)
After weather conditions pushed the start of tournament play at the Texas Classic until Sunday, Tulsa responded with a 9-5 opening win over Texas State. The Golden Hurricane countered five Bobcat runs to tie the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the sixth inning with a winning four runs in the top of the seventh.
Mikayla Jackson and Haley Morgan both drove in two runs in the Tulsa win against Texas State, and Abby Jones came across to score for the Golden Hurricane twice. Kylie Norwood and Imani Edwards each reached base three different times and scored one run.
No. 4 Florida 12, UCF (RV) 11
No. 4 Florida outlasted UCF by a 12-11 final in a wild game in Orlando. The teams combined for 27 hits and stranded 23 runners on base along with a total of 23 runs scored.
Jada Cody closed the game with three RBI to lead UCF and Allyse Volpe scored a total of three runs for the Knights. Johneisha Rowe, Katie Burge and Micaela Macario each added two runs scored in the UCF setback.
UNLV 5, Memphis 1
Memphis finished a 2-2 weekend at McNeese State with a 5-1 loss at the hands of UNLV. Alyssa Dean was a perfect 2-for-2 in the game for the Tigers and Taylor Smrt reached base three times and scored the lone Memphis run.
