CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Daniel Richardson threw three touchdown passes - two to LaJohntay Wester - as Florida Atlantic took a 38-16 win against Charlotte Friday night at Richardson Stadium.
Wester, the nation's leading receiver entering the game (9.1 receptions per game), had 10 catches for 149 yards and two touchdowns for the Owls, who outgained the 49ers 347-325 despite being on the short end of a near-17-minute discrepancy in time of possession. Florida Atlantic averaged 6.7 yards per play and took advantage of 12 Charlotte penalties for 104 yards.
Richardson had all three touchdown passes in the first half, including a nifty catch by Wester, who got a foot down in the back of the end zone to give the Owls a 21-6 lead late in the second quarter.
Florida Atlantic (4-4, 3-1 American) increased the lead to 28-6 on a 19-yard keeper by Michael Johnson Jr., but Charlotte was able to get back in it when the 49ers recovered an onside kick and Trexler Ivey hit tight end Jake Clemons for a 10-yard TD to make it 28-13.
After the teams exchanged field goals to close the third quarter, the Owls iced on Larry McCammon's 4-yard touchdown run with 2:12 to play.
Richardson went 18-for-25 for 216 yards and three touchdowns with an interception, while McCammon had 67 yards on 15 carries. Safety Jarron Morris had 11 tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss. The Owls registered five sacks in the contest.
Charlotte (2-6, 1-3 American) used four quarterbacks in the game and completed passes to 10 receivers. Freshman Terron Kellman had a game-high 83 rushing yards on 20 carries.
