In ballooning its current win streak to five consecutive games, the (RV) UCF Knights softball team left little doubt Sunday afternoon.
The weekend UCF Round Robin tournament represented a chance for the Knights to right the ship on the heels of a five-game losing streak, and UCF snapped the skid in convincing fashion with five consecutive victories, the last two of which coming Sunday morning and into the afternoon by 9-1 and 8-0 run-rule victories over North Dakota and Kennesaw State.
In the opener of its Sunday twin-bill, the Knights (15-13, 0-0 AAC) demonstrated admirable resolve in brushing off a 9 a.m. first pitch for their tilt against the Fighting Hawks (2-22, 0-0 SUM) following a Saturday evening game that preceded the daylight savings time change.
UCF picked up where it left off from its 11-5 Saturday win over the Owls with a four-run bottom of the first against North Dakota early Sunday morning, followed by a three-run second and two more scores in the fourth and fifth innings.
Houston 5, Tarleton 0 – Box Score
The University of Houston softball team clinched the win in its first three-game series of the year behind a 5-0, shutout victory over Tarleton on Sunday at the TSU Softball Complex.
Bree Cantu paced the Houston (12-12) offense in the rubber match, going 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs. Britaney Shaw hit two doubles, the second time this season that a Houston player hit two in a game, and and drew a pair of walks.
Tulsa 7, Sam Houston 5 – Box Score
Sophomore right fielder Kailyn Bearpaw set a career mark with five RBI, including the game winner, to lift the Golden Hurricane to a 7-5 win over Sam Houston in the finale of the Tulsa Invitational Sunday afternoon at the Collins Family Softball Complex
Tulsa finished the weekend 4-1 and move to 14-11 on the season as it closes a two-week homestand. Sam Houston dropped to 9-17 with pair of losses in the final day.
Freshman Riley Grant got the call in the circle, striking out the first batter she faced. She walked two and allowed a hit and two runs before exiting. Maura Moore (8-3) entered in the first inning as a relief pitcher and recorded the win. The sophomore pitched five and two-thirds, allowing five hits, three runs and striking out a pair.
South Florida 9, St. Francis 6 – Box Score
The University of South Florida softball team defeated the Saint Francis Red Fleshes, 9-6, on Sunday afternoon in the USF Tournament finale.
It was an action packed first inning with seven total runs scored between the Bulls and Red Flashes.
Saint Francis scored three runs in the top of the first. South Florida answered with four runs in the bottom half of the first inning.
Saint Francis would take the lead in the top of the fifth inning, but the Bulls quickly responded with one run in the bottom frame before adding two more insurance runs in the sixth inning.
Wichita State 13, Missouri State 2 – Box Score
No. 23 Wichita State regrouped from a 2-1 defeat Saturday night to Missouri State to run-rule the Bears in five innings, 13-2, Sunday afternoon at Wilkins Stadium.
Wichita State (19-5) finished the Shocker Classic, 3-1, with two wins over Nebraska and Sunday's victory over Missouri State.
Lauren Lucas was one of six Shockers with multiple hits on the afternoon, as Wichita State finished with 18 as a team. Lucas was a perfect 4-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Krystin Nelson had a career-high three hits to go with two runs and an RBI. Lauren Mills doubled and singled twice.
Pitt 14, Memphis 0 – Box Score
North Alabama 11, Memphis 3 – Box Score
The Memphis softball team dropped their last two games of the Tiger Classic. The Tigers (4-19) fell 14-0 to Pitt before ending the day with an 11-3 loss to North Alabama.
Kendall Lee was the only Tiger to reach base in the game against Pitt, drawing a full-count walk in the fifth inning. In the second game, Taylor Smrt drove in two runs for the Tigers with a single to center field.
