No. 25 Wichita State needed a walk-off hit from Lauren Lucas to defeat Western Illinois, 2-1, in eight innings Sunday evening at Wilkins Stadium to finish the weekend 4-0.
Wichita State (16-3) upped its win streak to 11 behind the extra inning win over Western Illinois and Bradley earlier in the day, 9-2. Lauren Mills led the offensive attack vs. the Braves, going 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI. Lauren Lucas, Lainee Brown and Taylor Sedlacek all had multiple hit games. Brown doubled and scored twice, while Sedlacek came in to score three times with a pair of singles. Lucas singled twice, scored and drove in a run.
Maryland 12, East Carolina 2 – Box Score
The East Carolina softball team fell 12-2 to Maryland in the final game of the Pirate Invitational on Sunday afternoon at Max R. Joyner Stadium.
The Pirates (16-5) finish the weekend 4-2 with both losses coming to the Terrapins. ECU tallied five hits on the day but Maryland's offense was on fire for most of the afternoon as the Terrapins recorded seven hits including three home runs.
Arizona State 8, Houston 4 – Box Score
The University of Houston softball team fell to #23/rv Arizona State, 8-4, to close out the weekend at the Sun Devil Classic on Sunday at Farrington Stadium.
Turiya Coleman finished the day 2 for 3 at the plate with a hit by pitch, a run and two doubles. Katy Repa also finished 1 for 2 with a run and a walk,, while Emma Robertson went 1 for 3 with a double and two RBIs.
Missouri 13, Tulsa 1 – Box Score
A big seventh inning for the 23rd-ranked Missouri Tigers ended any chance of a Tulsa comeback as the Golden Hurricane softball team fell 13-1 in the final game of the TU/OSU Invitational at the Collins Family Softball Complex on Sunday afternoon.
Tulsa ends the weekend with a 10-10 record after going 3-2 in the invitational while Missouri improved to 15-6 with the win.
Northern Illinois 6, South Florida 4 – Box Score
The University of South Florida softball team's late offensive run came up short in the 6-4 loss to the Northern Illinois Huskies on Sunday afternoon.
Freshman Jaden Martinez (Tallahassee) earned her fourth start of her career. She pitched 2.1 innings, allowed two hits and just as many runs. Senior Antoinette Hill (Braidwood, Ill.) came in for her 13th appearance. She pitched 2.2 innings. Morgan Grubb (Bartow) pitched the final two innings.
SIUE 3, Memphis 0 – Box Score
The Memphis Tiger softball team dropped a close game against SIUE 3-0, Sunday afternoon after a strong defensive showing from both teams. The Tigers (2-15) held the Cougars to one hit following the third inning, while creating big defensive moments in the outfield.
