Memphis 6, East Carolina 3 – Box Score
GREENVILLE. N.C. – The Memphis softball team picked up their second conference win on Sunday afternoon as they beat East Carolina 6-3. The Tigers (8-34) capitalized on hitting and bringing in runners on base, along with providing quality pitching throughout.
Memphis struck first as Kendall Lee hit a sacrifice fly deep into left field allowing Linsey Hargis to run in for the Tigers in the top of the first inning. Madison Berner added to the Tiger lead, running in as Aliana Zavala hit down the left field line.
The Tigers added to their lead in the top of the second inning as Hargis singled to left field, reaching second, as Emma Ponder slid into home plate, narrowly missing the tag for the third score of the game.
ECU got up on the board on a throwing error by the Tigers, adding two runs to its line in the bottom of the second inning.
The Pirates tied it up in the bottom of the third inning as Wilson hit a ball over the left field wall for the first homerun of the game.
Ponder scored her second run of the game as Sam Ibison singled to the shortstop, allowing Ponder to reach home before the ball in the top of the fourth inning.
Neely Taylor scored her first run of the game as Hargis hit a double deep into left field in the top of the sixth inning. Hargis finished her sixth inning showing running in the Tigers' sixth score of the day.
UCF 13, Tulsa 1 – Box Score
TULSA – The UCF softball team run-ruled Tulsa 13-1 in five innings in the rubber match on Sunday to take the American Athletic Conference series over the Golden Hurricanes. The Knights improve to 27-19 on the season, while Tulsa falls to 17-23.
Sarah Willis earned the start but lasted just 1.1 innings in the win. Kaitlyn Felton tossed the final 3.2 innings in the circle to improve to 6-4 on the season. She allowed no runs, while striking out three batters and giving up three hits.
Shannon Doherty had a dominant performance for the Knights, going 3-for-3 at the plate with six RBI and three runs scored. She hit two home runs – one in the first inning and another in the fifth inning. Micaela Macario joined Doherty with a long ball of her own to finish 1-for-2 at the plate with four RBI.
The Knights jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning, which included a two-run blast from Doherty. Tulsa answered in the bottom of the second with a fielder’s choice, but that would be the last scoring for the Golden Hurricane.
UCF scored multiple runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to run away with the victory. The Knights crossed home plate five times in the fourth inning to take a commanding 10-1 lead before Doherty connected on a three-run home run in the fifth inning.
Houston 4, Wichita State 0 – Box Score
WICHITA, Kansas – After two 1-run losses to #20/#23 Wichita State earlier in the weekend, Houston surged in the series finale, posting a 4-0 win over the Shockers on a windy Sunday afternoon at Wilkins Stadium.
Kenna Wilkey (14-9) tossed a three-hit shutout for Houston (19-21, 6-3). She tallied her fourth solo shutout of the year in her 12th complete game while striking out seven. Alison Cooper (11-4) picked up the loss for Wichita State, allowing four runs and eight hits in 6.1 innings in the circle.
The win extends head coach Kristin Vesely's streak of years with a win against a ranked opponent. She's defeated a ranked team in all seven of her years as Houston's head coach.
Cantu hit her 12th career home run in the third inning, a solo-shot to right field, to put Houston up 1-0.
Wilkey battled through a two-on, one-out situation in the bottom of inning to keep the lead intact.
In the sixth inning, on the heels of three consecutive singles from senior outfielder Paige Hulsey, Coleman and senior infielder Britaney Shaw, Baylea Myers notched a pinch-hit sac-fly to add an insurance run, making the score 2-0.
Houston, not willing to hit the brakes on offense, posted another two runs in the seventh. Senior catcher Kati Ray Brown doubled to lead off the inning, and a single from sophomore infielder Ja'Naiya Thomas put two on with no one out. Sophomore infielder Brooke Lorenzo advanced the runs with a sacrifice bunt, bringing up the top of the order for Houston with only one out.
Following a pitching change for Wichita State that brought Alex Aguilar to the circle, Cantu hit a sac-fly, scoring Brown and advancing Thomas, who scored in the next at-bat as Hulsey singled up the middle to make the score 4-0.
Wilkey continued to deal in the bottom of the seventh and, while allowing her third hit of the game in the frame, she shut the door on the ranked Shockers, clinching the shutout win.
