DALLAS – Florida Atlantic, South Florida, UTSA and Wichita State all posted victories in the second round of competition at the 2024 American Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Championship Thursday at the Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex.
Ninth-seeded UTSA opened the day with a 4-2 win over No. 8 seed Tulane, before fifth-seeded South Florida took down No. 12 seed North Texas, 4-1. Wichita State, the No. 7 seed, defeated No. 10 seed Tulsa, 4-0, before No. 6 seed Florida Atlantic was victorious over No. 11 seed UAB, 4-2, to close out the day’s action. The top four seeds enter the tournament on Friday, April 19.

UTSA 4, Tulane 2
Records: UTSA (15-6), Tulane (11-9)
UTSA opened the action on Thursday with a 4-2 win over Tulane with Ekua Youri coming from behind to win a three-set match to earn the clinching point.
Youri and Fatima Gutierrez defeated Tulane’s Cora Barber and Mackenzie Clark, 6-4, at No. 2 doubles to finish off the doubles point for the Roadrunners.
Vittoria Baccino made it 2-0 UTSA with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Barber at No. 4 singles, but the Green Wave tied the match with straight-set wins for Clark and Kristen Borland over Aleksandra Zlatarova (6-2, 6-3) at No. 2 and Cassie McLay (6-3, 6-4) at No. 3, respectively.
UTSA’s Magda Tuells defeated Jiayun Zhu, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 6 singles before Youri came from behind to win 0-6, 6-2, 6-3 over Brooke Theis to clinch the match.
The Roadrunners advance to play No. 1 seed SMU on Friday, April 19 at 10 a.m. ET/9 a.m. CT.
South Florida 4, North Texas 1
Records: South Florida (12-10), North Texas (9-13)
Nadja Bay Christians earned a straight-set victory at No. 2 singles to clinch a 4-1 victory for South Florida over North Texas.
Bay Christians was one of four Bulls to earn straight-set victories after the Mean Green clinched the doubles point with Lou Chalard and Carolina Laydner taking down Melisa Senli and Kelly Vargas at No. 3 doubles, 6-2.
South Florida’s Grace Schumacher defeated North Texas’ Olivia Malm, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, ahead of Gargi Pawar beating Lily Schultz, 6-0, 6-3 at No. 6. Marta Falsetto Font made it 3-1 for South Florida with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Chalard at No. 4 singles, before Bay Christians defeated North Texas’ Stadfany Nformi, 7-5, 6-3 at No. 2 singles to clinch the match for the Bulls.
South Florida advances to face No. 4 seed Rice at 1 p.m. ET/noon CT on Friday.
Wichita State 4, Tulsa 0
Records: Wichita State (13-9), Tulsa (11-12)
Wichita State became the first team to earn a 4-0 win in this year’s tournament, taking down Tulsa.
Jessica Anzo picked up a straight-set victory over Tayla Wilmot, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 6 singles, and was partners with Kristi Kudryavtseva at No. 1 doubles that clinched the point for the Shockers with a 7-6 (4) win.
Theodora Chantava and Xin Tong Wang also picked up straight-set wins for Wichita State over Lily Hutchings at No. 3 singles (6-2, 6-3) and No. 1 singles (6-4, 6-2), respectively.
The Shockers advance to face No. 2 seed Charlotte at 4 p.m. ET/3 p.m. CT on Friday.
Florida Atlantic 4, UAB 2
Records: Florida Atlantic (13-8), UAB (13-11)
Carla Galmiche earned a three-set victory to clinch Florida Atlantic’s 4-2 victory over UAB.
Galmiche closed out the doubles point with a 6-3 win alongside Amber McGinnis over UAB’s Klara Kajabova and Maggie White. She also was the clinching singles point with a come-from-behind 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory over Mackenzie White at No. 3 singles.
Lexi Silna pushed Florida Atlantic’s lead to 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Vanessa Mellynchuk at No. 5 singles, before UAB quickly tied the match with straight-set wins for Sydney Clarke (6-2, 6-1 over McGinnis) and Adela Wasserbauerova (6-4, 6-2 over Panna Bartha).
Victoria Gomez O’Hayon defeated Kajabova 7-6, 6-3 at No. 2 singles before Galmiche’s heroics at No. 3 singles.
The Owls advance to face No. 3 seed Memphis on Friday at 7 p.m. ET/6 p.m. CT.
