DALLAS – Top-seeded SMU won its second straight American Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Championship with a 4-0 victory over No. 3 seed Memphis Sunday afternoon at the Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex.
The championship match featured the last two American champions. SMU had won the 2023 championship after the Tigers won the 2022 title.
The doubles point came down to No. 3 and featured a 24-point tiebreaker. Both teams staved off set points, but in the end Maja Makoric and Millie Skelton of SMU (13-11) defeated Alice Amendola and Miriam Grosmann of Memphis (17-8), 7-6 (11).
In singles, Lana Mavor, the Championship’s Most Outstanding Player, won her third straight-set victory of the tournament and finished first for the Mustangs, defeating Memphis’ Emily Meyer, 6-1, 6-4 at No. 4.
Maja Makoric took down Alice Amendola, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5 singles to give SMU a 3-0 lead before Hadley Doyle clinched the title with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Monique Woog at No. 3 singles.
SMU, which earns The American's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship, improved to 16-8 all-time in The American Championship with its second consecutive title. The Mustangs join Tulsa (three), South Florida and UCF (two each) as the only schools to win the conference tournament more than once.
