IRVING, Texas – Four American Athletic Conference teams were among the 64 squads that were chosen for the 2024 NCAA Men's Tennis Championship.
Charlotte, which won its first American Athletic Conference title in thrilling fashion last week, earned The American’s automatic bid to the tournament, while Memphis, Rice and SMU were at-large selections.
The four American Athletic Conference teams selected marks the fourth consecutive season and the eighth time in the conference’s 10-year tournament history that The American has had at least three NCAA teams. It is the fifth time that the conference has sent at least four teams to the NCAA men’s championship.
Charlotte will head to Durham, North Carolina, for its first match of the tournament as the 49ers battle Alabama. Charlotte won the American Athletic Conference title after overcoming a 3-0 deficit and championship point to take a 4-3 decision against Memphis. The 49ers will play in the NCAA tournament for just the second time in program history and the first time since 2007. Charlotte would face either Duke or UNC Asheville in the second round with a win against the Crimson Tide.
SMU will begin tournament play against Stanford in Norman, Oklahoma, as the Mustangs return to the NCAA tournament for the 26th time overall. SMU would face either UT Arlington or No. 11-seeded Oklahoma in the second round with a win against the Cardinal. SMU and Stanford played in the NCAA Championship Final in 1983, when the Cardinal edged the Mustangs 5-4 for the national title.
Memphis is in the NCAA Championship for the 10th time overall and the seventh time in the last eight tournaments. The Tigers will face North Carolina in a first-round match in Knoxville, Tennessee, with a second-round match against either East Tennessee State or No. 7-seeded Tennessee awaiting the winner.
Rice will make its 13th NCAA Championship appearance and its first since 2017 as the Owls head to College Station, Texas, to face No. 15-seeded Texas A&M. A second-round match against either Baylor or San Diego awaits the winner.
First- and second-round competition takes place May 3-4 and features four teams playing in a single-elimination format. The winner of each site advances to super-regional competition May 10 or 11. Each super-regional site will feature two teams playing a single-elimination format. The super-regional winners advance to the Greenwood Tennis Center in Stillwater, Oklahoma, where the eight teams will compete for the national championship May 16-19.
