Charlotte won four singles matches in straight sets as the No. 7-seeded 49ers began defense of their American Athletic Conference title with a 4-1 win against No. 10-seeded Temple Thursday morning.

Charlotte’s Vasco Prata, who was the Most Outstanding Player of last year’s American Championship, continued his winning ways in the tournament with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles as the 49ers won at the Nos. 1, 3, 4 and 6 positions after Temple had taken the doubles point.

Ivan Dreycopp, Frederic Schlossmann and Lance Cochran also won in straight sets to send Charlotte on to a quarterfinal match against No. 2-seeded Memphis Friday. The match will be a rematch of last year’s championship final, when Prata helped the 49ers overcame a 3-0 deficit by fending off championship point and allowing Charlote to take a 4-3 win.

Dreycopp and Cochran were winners in both singles and doubles Thursday.

UTSA 4, Tulane 3

Oskar Grzegorzewski won a three-set battle at No. 3 singles to send No. 6-seeded UTSA past upset-minded Tulane Thursday in a first-round match.

Grzegrozewski broke a 3-3 tie against the No. 11-seeded Green Wave with a 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 win to send the Roadrunners on to a quarterfinal matchup against No. 3-seeded Florida Atlantic Friday.

Tulane, which had dropped its last eight matches entering the conference tournament, claimed an early 1-0 lead after the Green Wave took 6-4 victories at the top two doubles positions.

But UTSA tied the score as No. 105-ranked Tiago Torres won an efficient 6-3, 6-0 decision at No. 1 singles. The Green Wave gained a 2-1 lead on Alec Gaudin’s 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles, but again, the Roadrunners had an answer with Danijal Muminovic’s straight-set decision at No. 2 (6-1, 7-6 (4)).

The remaining three singles matches all went to three sets as Steven Rice put Tulane on the precipice of a win with a 6-1, 2-6 win at No. 6. But UTSA bounced back to close the match with Miguel Alonso’s 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 victory at No. 5 before Grzegorzewski’s clincher at No. 3.

No. 8-seeded Wichita State took the doubles point and won three singles matches in straight sets to take a 4-0 win against No. 9-seeded UAB Thursday afternoon.

Vanja Hodzic won in both singles and doubles for the Shockers as he helped stake Wichita State to a 2-0 lead with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles after he clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win at No. 3 alongside Luke Bracks.

Alejandro Jacome made it 3-0 with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles before Bracks ended the match with a 6-0, 7-5 victory at No. 6. Jacome and Bracks also were winners in singles and doubles for the Shockers, who improved to 12-12.
