CHARLOTTE, N.C. — AJ Swann threw three touchdown passes and Rashod Dubinion rushed for 111 yards as Appalachian State topped Charlotte 34-11 on Friday night in the Duke’s Mayo Classic at Bank of America Stadium.
After a slow first quarter, the Mountaineers (1-0) took control with 17 points before halftime. Dubinion capped a 9-play, 81-yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown run, and Swann connected with Jaden Barnes on a 10-yard scoring pass in the final minute of the half. Dominic De Freitas added a 47-yard field goal as time expired to make it 17-3 at the break.
Swann, who finished 31 of 46 for 368 yards, found Kanen Hamlett for a 19-yard score in the third quarter and sealed the win with a 1-yard toss to Alex Sanchez in the fourth. Barnes had six catches for 134 yards, while Dalton Stroman added 88 yards on eight receptions.
Charlotte (0-1) managed just 218 yards of offense and turned it over twice. Conner Harrell passed for 142 yards and a 16-yard touchdown to E. Jai Mason in the fourth quarter, but the 49ers trailed 27-3 before their only touchdown.
App State piled up 586 yards of total offense, holding the ball nearly 34 minutes and converting 7 of 15 third downs. De Freitas was 2-for-2 on field goals, including a 35-yarder early in the second half.
The Mountaineers held Charlotte to 76 rushing yards on 29 carries. Ja’Den McBurrows had an interception for App State, while linebacker Kadin Schmitz led the 49ers with nine tackles.
