MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Brendon Lewis accounted for two touchdowns and Memphis rolled up 432 yards of offense in a 45-10 win over Chattanooga on Saturday at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium.
Lewis was nearly flawless, completing 22 of 28 passes for 199 yards with a touchdown and one interception while adding 81 yards rushing, including a 22-yard score that gave Memphis (1-0) a 21-0 lead early in the second quarter. He connected with Cortez Braham Jr. on a 22-yard strike later in the period as the Tigers built a 28-3 halftime cushion.
The running game powered much of the attack. Sutton Smith ran for 60 yards and a 35-yard touchdown, Frank Peasant added 61 yards and a 12-yard score, and Greg Desrosiers Jr. capped the opening drive with an 8-yard touchdown run. Memphis averaged 7.1 yards per carry and totaled 233 rushing yards.
The defense also got into the scoring act. Cornerback DJ Ward intercepted Camden Orth in the third quarter and returned it 27 yards for a touchdown, pushing the lead to 31-3. The Tigers forced three turnovers, collected two sacks, and held Chattanooga (0-1) to 232 total yards.
Orth threw a 3-yard touchdown to Josh Williams in the fourth quarter, but the Mocs never got closer. Ryan Ingram led Chattanooga with 68 rushing yards, while Jacquon Gibson caught two passes for 25 yards.
Gianni Spetic kicked a 37-yard field goal for Memphis, while Jude Kelley’s 32-yarder provided Chattanooga’s only points before halftime.
Chris Bracy led the Tiger defense with 10 tackles. Memphis finished with 23 first downs to Chattanooga’s 13 and dominated on the ground and through the air to win its season opener. The Tigers surpassed 20 points for the 41st consecutive game, extending their best-in-the-nation streak.
