LAS CRUCES, N.M. — Logan Fife threw two touchdown passes, including a 15-yarder to Gavin Harris with 3:23 left, and New Mexico State rallied past Tulsa 21-14 on Saturday night at Aggie Memorial Stadium.
Fife completed 27 of 44 passes for 248 yards, finding Donovan Faupel on a 24-yard strike in the third quarter and Harris for the decisive score late in the fourth. Ryan Hawk added field goals of 46 and 38 yards as the Aggies (2-0) overcame a sluggish start to win their home opener.
Tulsa (1-1) took its first lead in the third quarter on Baylor Hayes’ 24-yard touchdown run, then briefly regained it at 14-13 on Hayes’ 18-yard pass to Brody Foley with 7:33 remaining. Hayes went 13 of 16 for 129 yards and a touchdown off the bench, while Dominic Richardson ran for 93 yards on 20 carries.
But the Aggies’ defense closed strong, intercepting Hayes twice in the fourth quarter and holding Tulsa to 147 rushing yards overall. Faupel finished with eight catches for 78 yards, while Harris had 34 yards on three receptions.
Tulsa outgained New Mexico State 376-291 but was undone by two turnovers and a missed 49-yard field goal to end the first half. The Aggies converted 10 of 19 third downs and held the ball for nearly 31 minutes.
