UConn and Louisville easily advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament with wins over Prairie View A&M and Idaho, respectively, while USF rolled into the WNIT third round during weekend hoops action around The American.
The Huskies routed Prairie View, 87-44, and will host Saint Joseph’s in a NCAA second round game Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. ET (ESPNU). Breanna Stewart (19 points, 10 rebounds) led a balanced UConn offense that saw five players in double figure scoring. With the win, the Huskies improved to 46-4 in NCAA games played in Connecticut, and 33-3 in games played at Gampel Pavilion.
Sara Hammond (16 points) led five Louisville players in double figures in the Cardinals’ 88-42 win over Idaho Sunday evening. Louisville will face Iowa in the second round of the NCAA tournament on Tuesday at 9:30 p.m. ET (ESPN2). Shoni Schimmel added a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds, and Jude Schimmel chipped in 14 points off the bench.
USF advanced to the third round of the WNIT with a 75-56 win over Stetson Sunday afternoon at the Sun Dome. The Bulls will host George Washington on Thursday at 7 p.m. USF set a new postseason program record by shooting 51.7 percent from the field against the Hatters. Inga Orekhova paced the Bulls with a game-high 22 points. Akila McDonald added a career-high 21 points on 10-for-11 shooting from the field.
Keena Mays had 34 points and set the SMU single-season record for scoring during the Mustangs’ WNIT second round loss at Minnesota Sunday evening. SMU trailed by as many as 19 points early in the second half, but was able to pull within two possessions in the final minutes. Mays ended her season with 691 points, breaking the previous single-season record held by head coach Rhonda Rompola by eight points.
