INDIANAPOLIS – The Tulsa and Houston women's teams, along with the men's programs from USF and Tulsa, will represent The American in the 2015 NCAA Tennis Championships, as both brackets were announced Tuesday evening.
Regional play will take place May 8-10 at campus sites, with the round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals and national championships being decided at Hurd Tennis Center in Waco, Texas, the home facility of Baylor, May 14-19.
In the women's championship, Tulsa will face Rice in Waco, Texas, hosted by No. 8 Baylor leading up to the final rounds of the NCAA Championships at Hurd Tennis Center. The Golden Hurricane won The American’s automatic qualifier with a thrilling 4-3 win over top-seeded Houston in The American Championship final at Case Tennis Center in Tulsa April 18. The Golden Hurricane, which holds a record of 16-10 this season, is making its ninth consecutive NCAA tournament appearance under 10
th-year head coach Dean Orford and 11
th overall bid.
Houston will travel to Berkeley, California to face Mississippi State with No. 3 national seed California a potential opponent in the second round. The Cougars - ranked No. 29 in the latest ITA poll - advanced to the final of The American Championship at Case Tennis Center in Tulsa earlier this month. The Cougars are 22-5 and rattled off a school-record 18 consecutive victories from Feb. 20-April 17. The bid is the second in as many years for the Cougars and sixth overall.
On the men's side, USF opens NCAA play in Blacksburg, Virginia, against Boise State, in a regional hosted by No. 15 national seed Virginia Tech. The No. 19 Bulls stand at 19-6 on the year and won The American’s automatic qualifier with a victory over host Tulsa at Case Tennis Center April 19. The Bulls feature two doubles pairs and one singles player - No. 19 Roberto Cid - listed in the most recent ITA rankings. The NCAA tournament bid is the second in as many years for USF and 12
th overall. The Bulls enter the NCAA tournament on a five-match winning streak.
Tulsa will travel to Fort Worth, Texas to face NC State at the home of No. 5 national seed TCU. The Golden Hurricane is 17-12 on the year and advanced to The American Championship final on its home courts at Case Tennis Center. Tulsa tallied one of the biggest wins of the college tennis season with a 4-3 win over then-No. 1 USC Feb. 28 in Los Angeles. The Golden Hurricane is making its 10
th consecutive NCAA tournament appearance and 17
th overall, all under head coach Vince Westbrook.
